Vancouver Chinatown - safe?

Recommended Posts

We are now in Vancouver and DID go to Chinatown last night. Every hotel employee said to DEFINITELY take a taxi. Glad we did. Sorry to say, we were very disappointed with Chinatown. The weekend summer street fair was only one block long. The area was filthy. A fair share of undesirables.

We area staying @Burrard and Robson. R/T taxi fare was about $30 - a complete waste of $.

We really wanted to like Chinatown. However having been to Chinatowns in NY, SF & LA this doesn't even come close.

As I mentioned in another post; most of the Chinese population now lives in the suburbs. Richmond (and its two large weekend night markets) is the part of town to head to. From downtown just grab the Canada Line Skytrain; pretty much all the malls, shops, everything are Chinese once you get down to No3 Rd (any of the last few stops on a Brighouse train)

An alternate area of Chinese is the Metrotown area of Burnaby. Crystal Mall is a pretty good example of Chinese market and modern chinese stores

(Just as an aside - I don't know why some people can't post an opposing view without being snarky.)

I am still a Putterdude fan! LOL

Sorry it didn't live up to your expectations, I hope the rest of your vacation goes better.:)

Hi Folks,

Having just returned, SWMBO thinks the Chinese food in Richmond is better.

We met some YVR Chinese locals on our trip and they said they regularly go to Richmond to dine out.

Take the Canada Line down to Aberdeen Station/Shopping Centre and there are a couple of good ones in the mall (NOT the food court) or just outside.

We did end up at the Night Market on River Rock; Kid got overwhelmed and we had to eat and scoot. From Kid's perspective he saw everything from just below the belt line;)

Is there a hotel for around $150 downtown comfortable to stay in. I am arriving there at 7:15 and should get to the hotel around 9:00pm so just sleeping before the cruise. H

If you can reach into the mid $160's + booking fees, there are two 4* listed on Hotwire that would be good. Otherwise I am seeing the Century Plaza and Executive Hotel Vintage Park in the $140 range on Hotwire. A cruiser favourite, the Blue Horizon on Robson is $168 on a direct booking. Quality Inn Downtown-Inn on False Creek is $139 on Booking.com. Some of the others I was thinking about are booked for those dates. Staying out near the airport is an option and a good hotel at $150 would be a slam-dunk...the Westin, the Sheraton, the Radisson, the Sandman-Signature, and the Holiday Inn Express are all showing under $151 on Hotwire.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn @ YVR Airport on Bridgeport Road, its about a 5 minute free-shuttle ride from the airport. You can see it on final approach if your sitting on the left side of the plane. We got a room for about $130 CAD + tax per night YMMV.

The Bridgeport Sky Train Station is right behind it as is the River Rock Casino. Its two short blocks thru a parking lot.

You can take the Sky Train to the end at Waterfront Station and follow the train of suitcases to the cruise terminal ;)

Sounds like you like the Blue Horizon. I assume it is a quick cab ride to the cruise dock. H

I don't have a problem with any of the hotels I have named but the Blue Horizon is very highly regarded by cruisers, we constantly hear from cruisers how much they have enjoyed the hotel. As Ut. has said, Canada Place is walkable and a cab would be in the range of $10.
