What all gets charged to your S&S card?

I need to tell my dad how much cash he should put on his S&S account when we go onboard.

I know there's the:

  • 11.50 per day tips
  • alcoholic drinks he would buy
  • specialty restaurants (but we are on Paradise - so there's none, right?)
  • casino - but he doesn't gamble
  • photos - are those about $20 each?
  • Any gifts

What am I forgetting?

You put everything on your card. Cash is only accepted for the casino, bingo, and pulltabs I believe.

Our last cruise on the Inspiration in March you could use your card for Bingo. Cash couldn't be used.

Chef's Table is $75.

Behind the Fun tour is $55 for the smaller ships, $75 for the larger.

so if i put cash on the account that is associated with the card thing, i can use that card everywhere on the ship?? Im a little confused

We always put cash on our sign and sail card, because the last night of our cruise if there is any money left, I go to the casino hand them my card, tell them I want that amount in chips. Then I play one bet on a table. After that I take my chips and cash out. They give you cash at the casino desk. It's easier then taking home a refund check from Carnival. Plus I now have cash for the trip home for whatever I need.

Now I am confused also. We're planning on booking our next cruise while on the ship in two weeks. I was told (somewhere here on cruise critic) that I would pay for that from my sign and sale. Is that not the case?

I use cash on my sign and sail. I give them my debit card to swipe when I check in then I give cash to the purser desk. I keep a check on my balance on the tv and when I get low on my cash credit I go put more on the account. The debit card is there in case I don't make it before my cash runs out or my wife gets in the photos without me knowing. I usually end up with close to a zero balance at the end of my cruise.

to do this will cost you 3% of your cruising dollars. Ships now offer kiosks that you can take money out or add money to your account.

Carnival also does not give our refund checks no longer-- refunds are now mailed and if its less then 5.00 they take that money and donate to St Judes

no, you need a major credit card to book the cruise onboard.

the reason being-- if you cancel that booked cruise they need to have somewhere to put the money back to.

You can prepay the gratuities and not have to worry about them. Otherwise they'll come out on the second day of the cruise.

You can either charge money for the casino to the card, or if you're at the tables, buy chips from the dealer/croupier/stickman with cash.

Photos - depending on the type, portrait vs. "Carnival Snaps" for example, the price can range anywhere from about $10.00 to $25.00, but I guess if you buy a lot, they'd average out to about $12.00.

If you pay for a shore excursion on the ship it'll be charged to your S&S, but you can pre-order most excursions online, and they'd be prepaid.

You can place a Credit Card on the account, and be charged as you spend. If you're like me and only use a Debit Card, it can get totally fouled up if you try to use it. Carnival will charge $200.00 to $300.00 "Blocks" of money against the Debit, and straighten it out later, sometimes several weeks after the cruise is completed. Unless you keep a lot of money in the account your Debit Card is against, you can run up a bunch of overage and bounced-check charges as a result.

If you put cash on your S&S account, the last morning of the cruise (the arrival morning) there will be an charge sheet placed under your door, and if you have deposited more that you have used, a check for the difference will be attached. If you need to add to your account, there are ATM's on board that you can use your Debit Card to withdraw. Plan ahead and make one large withdrawal, since there is a charge for using the ATM. (around $6.00, I think)

The simple answer to my long missal (and your question) is: plan on about $45.00 per person a day if you plan to drink or buy a lot of photos, or don't prepay your gratuities. Any excess you deposit will be refunded at the end of the cruise.

When did this change? In Feb and May, I had the refund checks attached to my vouchers like always... Maybe it depends on the ship?

Holy crap everyone. I don't know where to begin. ThNk you for the help. I greatly appreciate it. Me and my fiancée have a change box that we been sving for. Few years so were going to bank to cash that in. When we get on the ship we will probably add half of all the cash that we bring and just simply use the s&s card. If we need cash we will make sure we bring a little extra for tipping, or whatever.

Again, thanks for the help everyone!!! :)

My 9/28 cruise is almost here!!!

  • 2 weeks later...
What if I want to set up each person in my group with their own account, with cash only (to limit spending)? Can I do that online on the Carnival site or do I have to do it in person?

When you do online check in, check everyone and mark them "no charging privileges." They go down and apply their own cash or cc at guest services or the blue kiosks.

I still cruise for Warm Chocolate Melting Cake (with 2 sugar-free vanilla ice-creams!)
