Buying scotch in civitavecchia

Hi,

Anyone have an idea of pricing for bottle of Scotch in Civi? And where to buy? We'll be there in October.

On last trip, we purchased wine at the local grocery store down the street from our hotel (Traghetto). Very convenient & extremely good vino prices.

Thanks to all for response!

Cheers,

Nancy Jo (NJ) :)

We have found that Scotch is usually more expensive in Italy then in the USA. You would certainly find better deals at the duty-free shop on your cruise ship. And if you are embarking on a cruise from Civitavecchia most cruise lines are going to take any liquor when you board the ship (some will return it and some will not). The deals on wine are sure a lot better :)

Thanks Hank,

We're doing back-to-back cruises. If we bought scotch at duty-free beginning of 1st cruise, would they let us have bottle at end of 1st cruise??

We bought a bottle of Lagavulin on Elba for €40, which was a bit of a bargain for that particular whisky. Italians are fond of good Scotch, and you might well find a pretty good deal in Civitavecchia. If your ship will allow you to bring it on board, you are likely to find a different selection than the ship's duty-free shop will have.

From your other posts we gather that you will be on a RCI ship. That cruise line has a tough policy regarding liquor and if they would let you have it aboard they will take it from you upon boarding and hold it until the last night of your cruise. Not sure if you might fall between the cracks and have your liquor delivered to you the last night of your first cruise. You might toss this idea out on the RCI boards. As a scotch lover we are always looking for bargains on high-end scotches....and have seldom found great deals in Europe. Some of the airport Duty-free shops have OK prices, but still nothing to shout about. Our favorite place (in the world) for serious Scotch purchases is in Phillipsburg, St Maarten where we know a liquor store that has an amazing Scotch collection (often over 100 kinds of Scotch) at very good prices.

I should add that last year I looked for Scotch bargains while visiting Edinburgh and found their prices about the same (or higher) then scotch at home. The problem is that most of the EU countries have very high taxes (especially VAT). The one bargain place in Europe seems to be at Gibraltar.....and even their prices are not as good as St Maarten or St Thomas.

Hey Hank,

We'll be on Navigator Oct. 20&27 cruises. It's my understanding you can bring 4 bottles of vino on board at once if doing a B2B. The scotch could be a problemo. Hubby doesn't really drink but likes a touch of scotch (medicinal purposes!). Ill try asking on roll call forum for our cruise - maybe some of the experienced B2B pros will know. This is our first one.

Thanks for info re St. Maarten - we'll check that out on our TA cruise in Nov.

Cheers,

NJ :)
