Explorer of the Seas Wi-fi question

I'm having trouble finding an answer to this by searching, so I would be really grateful if someone could answer this for me. How does wifi work on EOS? I know you can pay 65 cents a minute or buy a package. Do they have wifi all over the ship? Or is it only in certain places? Is it wifi, or do you have to plug in somewhere?

 

We're leaving in 3 days!! :D But we just found out that DH has to stay connected to work this week. Just need to check email once a day or so.

Currently, Explorer has WiFi in about a half-dozen hotspots around the ship. There will be a brochure with the hotspot map in the guest computer area on deck 8 near the aft centrum.

I forgot to mention that in order to use WiFi, you must first use one of the guest computers to create a username and password.

Just be aware that it is not always reliable. When out to sea, I have had multiple occasions on Voyager class ships, that have not had their wifi upgraded, where wifi would be out for an extended period of time. I do not believe that Explorer is updated yet so this will likely happen for your DH.

 

When in port it was more reliable and depending on your ports of call you can usually find wifi near the pier.

We have been on both Explorer and her sister ship Adventure and had no reliability issues with WiFi other than being slow to today's standards. I highly recommend that if you only need to use WiFi once or twice per day that you utilize RCI Online on deck 8 of the ship. More comfortable, no distractions and you can get your work done and save some internet costs. The hotspots on the ships are hit and miss plus many distractions that will cost you time and internet service costs. I must use internet for my online business and use it quite extensively. Have yet to be on an upgraded shipwide WiFi ship so have had to persevere with the various spots on the ship and much prefer RCI Online to get work done.

 

What itinerary are you doing on Explorer? If it is Bermuda and you have a balcony room and your balcony overlooks the port, you may be in luck as I have heard that you can pick sometimes pick up the port's Wifi on a balcony facing the port. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, when we docked in Bermuda, we were on the other side of the ship.

Oh wow, the port itself has wifi? We are going to Bermuda, and I always thought maybe we would find some shop or something that has wifi and use it there.

In the last several years I've been on the Adventure, Mariner, and the Navigator. I have found the best wifi reception is in the Promenade Café. I thought it would be the internet café, but the IT guy up there told me the Promenade is best for wifi.

 

Another place I like to use is wherever the desk for the international loyalty ambassador/concierge is located. It seems to have a strong signal, too, and is empty for hours every day. I use one of the visitor chairs and the desktop. It's usually located in some public area, but different on different ships.

The price is now .75 cents/minute, but you can signup for a package of minutes that is used over the 7 days. First go to one their wired computers and signup using your seapass card to establish your account ID and password.

 

In order to get reliable service you must be close to one of the listed hotspots. My favorite is the library, it's usually quiet and connectivity is great. I'm not saying there is never any problems with Wi-Fi connectivity, I have never had a problem. Sea days are slow 9-5 and 4-6 on other days. RCI's computers use the same connections and are just a slow.

 

I never use the ships computers they are old and slow. They don't have any of your passwords or IDs stored, and you have a choice of only one browser. Which may or may not be able to open your attachments. For instance you cannot open an excel spreadsheet (note: I have not used their computers, other than to set up an account, in a long time).

 

I did experience, for the first time, on my last cruise that FireFox browser did not work for the logon. I had to logon using Explorer web browser and then return to Firefox.

 

Use your own laptop, unless you want to sit in a room with 20 teenagers and families huddled around 9-10 PCs.

You will see many people sitting on benches right at the port using their laptops and tablets. If I recall it was around $4 per day unlimited usage.

It is one of those unmentioned perks that come with the job. The pleasure of being able to still get to work a little to break up the hassles and pain of relaxing on those dreadful things called a vacation .:mad:

He's an academic so he doesn't get vacation time officially. It's kinda like you are always on call, but there are times when there are less things going on so you can take a vacation. But some things have come up for his project lately so that he still needs to check email occasionally in case someone needs him to respond ASAP. It's not bad. We almost thought that he would be so tied up with his paper that he couldn't leave at all :(, but they finished it this week so we're good now.

We were on the Ex on 9/29. As Diamonds we had 60 min each. We used 2 passwords and used them. I had my IPad with me. We also bought the $99.00 package w/20 percent discount. We sat on the leather couches outside of the casino nice and quiet and private. Usually got a connection with no problem.
