Need Advice: Snorkel on my Own, or with Eagle Ray?

Looking for some input. I will be in Coz on a Saturday in January from 730a - 6pm and want to snorkel. Based on research, I've boiled my options down to the following:

1. On My Own. Rent a car and snorkel at Punta Sur and Playa Palancar.

2. Eagle Ray 3 Reef excursion

Any advice on what choice might be best? Thanks.

I've been in Cozumel with people who have driven in rental cars, but the traffic patterns there are so crazy -I- would NOT want to be driving my own car.

If I wanted to snorkel, I'd head to Chankanaab or Money Bar in a cab.

Where does the 3 reef snorkel go? We saw lots of snorkel boats drop off at Money Bar (Dzul-Ha reef), which seems a bit of a waste since you can get there for like $8. When I was scuba diving Paradise Reef we noticed tons of snorkelers overhead, and that also seemed a bit of a waste, because the reef is a good 20 feet below you, so you are only observing from a distance (even though the visibility is good), unless you're a great free diver. Me personally, I'd rather be just above the coral and among the fish.

We used Eagle Ray a couple of years ago and were very happy with the tour.

More recently, especially when cruising without kids, we snorkel from the shore at the Money Bar and then head to one of the beach clubs (Nachi or Paradise) depending upon how long we are in port and our port hours.
