Boytjie Posted January 11, 2014 #51 Share Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) What is a polo shirt? A jersey with a collar? The way I read it is a jersey/sweater with a collared shirt underneath. But I could be wrong. A polo shirt: Edited January 11, 2014 by Boytjie

ATLJFL Posted January 11, 2014 #53 Share Posted January 11, 2014 I just got off the Noordam for the New Years Eve and believe it or not I saw several men dining in the MDR on New Years Eve wearing jeans (very casual faded jeans) tee shirts and flip flops. They were obviously seated. It is far from the norm and I agree with the above posters about lacking self respect. It's an elegant cruise dining room, not MacDonalds. Even at the lowest discounted price for the cruise, if you can afford to go on the cruise, you can afford to find a pair of slacks and sport coat. They even sell them at the goodwill if cost is an issue. JMO but the dress codes seem to lessen every year. Smart casual does not equate to sloppy. I was on a Celebrity cruise (Silhouette) for NYE and everyone seemed to be dressed appropriately with a lot of tuxes and gowns to be seen. Given that these two lines are supposedly both higher-end mass market lines, it seems they should be attracting the same group...? Further, on Celebrity on the second formal night (not NYE), while we were waiting to be escorted to our table, we saw a man being given a jacket to wear into the MDR as he claimed not to have one. I found the MDR very elegant every night and never noticed any shorts (though plenty of EXTREMELY short skirts on young women -- yeesh, one inch more and it would have been indecent). Needless to say my 21-year-old son loved that.
Boytjie Posted January 11, 2014 #56 Share Posted January 11, 2014 So just to be clear : Jersey = sweater ? In the Queen's English, yes. "a knitted garment covering the upper part of the body" Pullovers, cardigans, sweaters, jerseys... also rugby jerseys. :)
innlady1 Posted January 11, 2014 #57 Share Posted January 11, 2014 I just have to ask what a jersey with a collar is. The only shirt-type garment I can think of that is called a jersey is worn by athletes (and their fans ;)) and would look really silly with a collar. :) Maybe it's a regional thing? Could be regional - I don't know. My mother, who was born in 1910, always referred to t-shirts or polos "as jerseys". We're from New England. I've not heard that moniker for years. Shorts in the dining room at night, and on the last night I saw sweatpants in the dining room. Throw in a smattering of escapees from the loony bin,in their robes in the lido, men without shirts and shoes in the lido. On formal nights when I went to the show there were a few in dirty shorts a cheap t-shirt they bought in port and the brightest white New Balance sneakers you ever saw, they looked like Neil Armstrong footwear. There was such a small number of these people that they stuck out like a turd in a puncbowl, but I'm sure they were oblivious to it all.
