Nice shorts & smart casual

Does anyone even think why shorts are a problem? It even used to be at ANY time in a dining room... breakfast, luncheon or evening. The whole reason was that passengers cover lotion over their back of legs.... everything stains the fabric.

 

There is always a reason!

Many years ago a Maitr'd told me that I could could not wear the Bermuda national dress. I told him politely that I could. A second later Hotel Manager Dirk Zeller came into the restaurant and I was immediately seated at my table. End of that was that!

 

There is no difference where someone from the Phillippines wears their national dress for formal wear.... no jacket, no tie, shirts outside trousers etc etc.

Well, I say if it was for cruise wear... and had to meet the dress requirement... it would be comfortable and easier to pack!

 

Only requirement that to be wear the shorts you have to down a pitcher of Swizzle and then read a moped at 20 mph...safely!!! ;)

Most likely, you would be turned away at the door of the MDR if you wear shorts. I believe you can dine in the Lido with shorts, though.

 

Not always. Even though the dress code specifies long pants, there have been occasions when people in decent shorts are in the dining room. It's really a matter of which DRM is minding the door.

I honestly think that Bermuda shorts and a jacket are fine. I really go high and right when I see men wearing ball caps at the dinner table. My momma would rise from the grave and slap me silly if I did that. Just my $.02 worth.

while we didn't dress for dinner at home, certain things were expected -- clean clothes, clean hands, no hats, and polite conversation. That is all I ask for on a cruise -- however that being said -- one night there was a trio of folks in outfits that even here in the south would be frowned upon -- hard to describe -- ripped shirts, low cut t's, extremely short shorts on a formal night in the Ocean bar.

On my December cruise I did not notice anyone in shorts in the MDR for dinner. However, at lunch I saw people in nice dress style shorts MDR. On formal night in the MDR, gentlemen were given a jacket in order to be seated. It was really nice to see every look nice and presentable.

I wore shorts in the MDR. They're just above the knee black and in a suit type fabric and I wear them with black tights and a nice blouse. I used to wear them for work too so maybe it depends on what type of shorts.

 

Nobody said anything and I was so happy to wear them as it meant I was finally back in my size 6 clothes :D

He gent is jacket open and is showing his cummerbund. Not pulled up too high.... heavens... if they these shorts down the way they wear in Prison (is that Prisondam).... these shorts would wear down to their ankles!!!

 

All is well! Sent a note a weeks or a but back but I think it may have to wrong e-mail.

Hmmm... my mom did the same thing... a 'ringing slap round you ears'....

is what is called 'learning a lesson the hard way'. Sure looks like it worked for you too!

In Bermuda formal wear does not include shorts; formal wear for men would be tux/dinner jacket.

You and me too, Gator. If a friend's nephew comes to my home I always ask him to remove his cap. They should not be worn indoors. Christmas Eve the kid, in his mid 20's spent the whole evening with a winter toque.

Of course we all know that a HAL bathrobe trumps all. Especially with the little "paper" slippers they provide :D

 

We have actually witnessed a "robe person" come into the MDR at lunch. She got a few feet inside the door before the maître's spotted the "robe person" and quickly escorted her outside the MDR. DW's comment was that some folks just do not understand the "bath" part of "bathrobe. On the other hand, after witnessing some of the "formal clothes" on our recent Veendam cruise,...one could make an argument that a bathrobe would be a step-up in fashion for some folks. :)

I get the desire to be able to wear them on warm weather cruises. We are all in shorts all day on these trips. We usually forego the dining room so it's not an issue at night either. With that said, I think women get it easier here because a skirt (or even a dress) can be just as comfortable as the shorts. Men don't have the luxury of an option that's quite as cool and comfortable.

A pair of dockers/khakis can be purchased at Marshall's, Kohl's or wherever for a very low price. Most people find them plenty comfortable. Wear a jersey with a collar and you would be dressed fine. And that would work for both men and women.

 

I just have to ask what a jersey with a collar is. The only shirt-type garment I can think of that is called a jersey is worn by athletes (and their fans ;)) and would look really silly with a collar. :) Maybe it's a regional thing?

My mother used to call t-shirts, polo shirts, etc., "jerseys" (and to clarify, if my mother were alive today, she would be 100). I think it's a term that has fallen by the wayside.
