Cruise NH Posted January 27, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2014 I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question...but here goes... If a ship's itinerary shows an eastbound (eg US to Australia) schedule like below. Does is really mean you have 4 days at sea or 5 days at sea? Feb 1 At Sea Feb 2 At Sea Feb 3 Cross International Dateline Feb 4 At Sea Feb 5 At sea And, same schedule going westbound how many days is it. I think I'm confused because the cruise lines list it as consecutive dates but don't you lose a day or gain a day? I'm trying to sell my husband on a world cruise and he's looking sideways at some of the long stretches at sea so I'm trying to mitigate that a little bit. Can anyone help? Thanks

Thanks My wife and I took the cruise westbound from Sydney in 2012. It was listed as a 29 day cruise and we had two April 25ths. The explanation that we received was "at the international date line , a +12hour and a -12 hour meet, bringing about a 24 hour change. When the line is crossed heading East a day is subtracted. When the line is crossed heading West a day is added". We gained the day back that we had lost on the way over to Australia. It was a wonderful cruise. jtl513 Posted January 28, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) The schedule would not show consecutive dates (1,2,3,4,5) as you have it. Here's an actual US to Aus (westbound, not eastbound) this year, the Volendam leaving Los Angeles on Sep 27. day date 12 09 Oct 2014 At Sea 13 10 Oct 2014 Pago Pago, American Samoa 08:00 AM 05:00 PM 14 11 Oct 2014 Cross International Dateline CO 15 13 Oct 2014 Dravuni Island, Fiji TR 08:00 AM 05:00 PM 16 14 Oct 2014 Lautoka, Fiji 08:00 AM 05:00 PM The 12th "goes missing" but 24 hours don't evaporate. You don't really gain or lose a day or gain a day, you gain or lose a date. A 21 day cruise has 21 sunrises and 21 sunsets, regardless what the calendars on either side of the dateline say. catl331 Posted January 28, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2014 day date 12 09 Oct 2014 At Sea 13 10 Oct 2014 Pago Pago, American Samoa 08:00 AM 05:00 PM 14 11 Oct 2014 Cross International Dateline CO 15 13 Oct 2014 Dravuni Island, Fiji TR 08:00 AM 05:00 PM 16 14 Oct 2014 Lautoka, Fiji 08:00 AM 05:00 PM So there's one sea day between Pago Pago and Dravuni, not two as the dates would indicate. Rare erewhon Posted January 28, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2014 So there's one sea day between Pago Pago and Dravuni, not two as the dates would indicate. Looked up my cruise diary, were in Pago Pago, Thursday 10th October,2013, the 12th October At Sea, the 13th October were at Suva Fiji. There was no 11th October on board the Volendam. Cruise NH Posted January 28, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted January 28, 2014 I copied this from Cunard's schedule for 2015 on the Queen Victoria: Tue 24 Feb Honolulu, Hawaii Wed 25 Feb At Sea Thu 26 Feb At Sea Fri 27 Feb X Intl Dateline Sat 28 Feb At Sea Sun 1 Mar At Sea Mon 2 Mar Apia, Samoa But your right, jtl513, on Holland America's itinerary for the world cruise they do skip the date. You can see why I was confused checking out all the world cruise itineraries.

That would be more confusing to me, because it looks like you'd have 5 consecutive sea days, while it really is 4 days with 27/28 being the same day.
