Is there tax charged on the pre-purchase of onboard credits or gifts?

Several years ago we purchased onboard credits for relatives sailing on another cruise line. We requested the certificates to be delivered to them when they boarded. I know the line charged tax “because the certificates were delivered while still in port”. The ship left from Florida. I forget if we paid the tax, or if the value of the credit was reduced by the tax, but either way we would have been better off giving them cash.

 

How does Princess handle taxes on credits or other gifts? Does it matter when the gifts are delivered?

I ordered flowers from Princess for my upcoming transatlantic on the Emerald Princess and was charged just the cost of the arrangement without any taxes.
