I am not in a suite.... We are in a mini suite..... So I guess this is where the confusion comes from.... Do most of you not pre pay the gratuities?

People all have different opinions with tips. I was on the breakaway in a spa balcony. Upon arrival we saw the cabin steward and gave him $20 the first day. I personally gave $1 for each drink I got in the casino (I had a free drink card in the casino). We also left $3 for breakfast and $6 for lunch (if we did not eat in the buffet). We also gave the room steward another $30 at the end of our trip. He was great. We had room service every morning for coffee and gave him $2 or $3. This was all in addition to the DSC that we paid before we even went on the cruise. Also tipped the bag porter on our way in and on our way out. Everyone has a difference of opinion. There is no right or wrong way in tipping preferences although I will say its wrong to not tip your butler if you are in a suite. To each there own as it's said. There were 3 of us in our cabin.

Thank you for your reply! Is 1 or 2 $a bag still a nice tip for the bag porter?

Our cabin gratuities get added on each day. We have never used the prepay option prior to boarding the ship. We have stayed in a mini suite and a balcony on cruises but we tipped for room service, when there was above and beyond service, and when we had a request and not only was it was taken care of there was also a follow-up to ensure everything was ok. We also felt in some circumstances a little $ present (not tip) for those we had daily contact with and made our trip feel more like coming back home rather than being away from it.

Thank you for your reply!!

Depends where you are and what kind of portering. In NYC, we generally give the guy we hand the bags to (checking in) $4-5 a bag. When we return, we get a porter who loads our bags on a cart, takes us through customs, and brings the cart and bags right up to our car in the parking lot (will help us get them into the car as well) - that guy we give $40-50 for two or three of us (3 checked bags plus carry ons, etc). Haven't sailed out of anywhere else in a while, but for checking in bags, I'd say we give $20 for 5 bags or so (usually sail with more people out of other ports)...

I totally agree with your reply. Depending on number of bags and if the porter is taking them to the car etc. is the way we handle the tip. I still use my tried and true answer to tipping -- sometimes there is someone who should get just a tad more.

Also, if you have children staying in the kids program they aren't included in the DSC either.

We are sailing with family on the Getaway soon, our 3.5 year old grandson loves environments like the kids programs - who do we tip and how much?

It seems that our room attendants deserve an extra cash tip at the end of our cruises, many times our concierge, butlers lately have not been very impressive......
