New Smoking Policy ruins Cruise

Recommended Posts

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peteroborne/100255698/the-smoking-ban-killed-the-british-pub-this-vandalism-is-labours-defining-legacy/

Please read the FACTS.. 33% of public housing staff lost their jobs directly linked to the smoking ban.

So if you are originally from the UK, and have 1st hand experience of the pub industry and can say that no pubs closed or people lost their livelihoods .

I'll eat my hat and accept you are indeed the most qualified person alive on the outcomes of banning smoking.

You must be very self opinionated wearing blinkers and think that the world is all rosy and peachy, and that the ripple affect is actually a myth.

I have a mate who owned a pub before the ban, and now does not own a pub, he is very interested to hear your expert analysis on how banning smoking had no effect whatsoever.

I read your link. Let me see if I understand. We have an internet poster in Dallas (you) referencing a blogger in the UK, who claims that "he had been told" that one third of bar jobs were lost in a province in Canada due to a smoking ban. Well heck, my brother-in-law's cousin's mechanic's bookkeeper's friend in that province says its just not true! :D

I will admit that you seem to have good information about ONE pub which is no longer in business, from your mate who owned it. Was it the smoking ban that killed it, or the many other factors mentioned by comxkid, or a combination of all of it?

I look at controversial threads as an opportunity to potentially educate and/or open peoples' minds to an alternate way of thinking. When presented facts, informed conclusions can be made.

It doesn't alway work however. :)

Agreed and we can debate until we are blue in the face, with facts statistics and opinions.

It is always good to see both sides of a debate. Whether Pro or against.

Smoking will always be an issue on a ship in a pub and for health reasons.

One comment I would like to make! if this was missed, I am a smoker, not hiding that fact, but I am considerate to policies laws and other people.

People have to remember I choose to smoke, just like people Choose to drink

I also love to cruise and when the day comes that smoking is banned totally on every ship in every fleet. Which IMHO will not happen. Then I will look at beach holidays, with a nice Cabana, fresh towels and a golf cart to get me back and forth from my beach house:)

And when they ban smoking on beaches.. I'll just sit by the pool in my backyard:cool:

Would it not be easier to quit? Yah, I know the answer to that question .

But it would be in your best interest. No matter what you choose I wish you calm seas :)

You are getting yourself all confused now, keep up with posts..

Look back, someone else made a reference to pubs in Canada.. Not me sir.

And. I am an Ex-Pat now living in Dallas.. And regularly go back to the UK each year, so from 1st hand experience.. See it with my own 2 eyes.

And the mate and pub I was referring to is/ was the Green Dragon in Horndean Hampshire UK.. Google it you are good at that.

Now it is a grocery store...

Let's get wet, think you need to take a dip in your pool and cool off sir.

Go google that pub for me.. And you can save that link in your fact database.

Agree completely. As you may guess, I am a non-smoker (that grew up in an indoor smoking household).

But, this may surprise you....I am a big believer in the rights of people to choose what they want to do with their lives...without breaking laws/rules and/or adversely affecting those around them. I don't believe smoking should be banned on a cruise ship. However, I do believe that people should have the opportunity for a smoke-free enviroment. One side of the outdoor deck and an enclosed smoking area seperate from the casino would be idea. This does make it a little more inconvenient for the smoker, but it's more convienient than been barred from smoking anywhere on the ship.

Hey, I'm willing to take you at your word about that ONE pub closing, after all, you have personal, direct information on that one. The pubs in Canada reference was made by the Times UK blogger that you posted the link for. That was the ONLY reference he made to a loss of one third of jobs - not in the UK at all, but "he was told" that it happened somewhere in Canada.

gah!

Gah!!! Why read it.. Another point proven. Another smoking thread !!!!!

I don't like baseball, so I don't go to watch it! Get my drift.

Don't even look at thread..the debate is an interesting one, your comments and input would be gladly received.

Lots of Pro's and Con's

Happy Days!

Not sure what the point of this posting is. Would you feel comfortable with the poster telling you to eat less, exercise more, gamble less, or attend church more often?

Some of them have been interesting....but thanks for your contribution.

Interesting observation....thanks for your input.

Why so rude? If someone's comments don't interest you, you can surely pass them by. *shrug* Sometimes, people type what they are feeling. If a "Gah!" is what they are feeling, then so be it. I find it doesn't detract nearly as much as something like what you have said here. :);)

We are not going to agree or disagree here, but it has been an entertaining interesting debate. Of which That is what debates are for.

You didn't ask me, but I'd feel LESS comfortable - because I probably SHOULD eat less, exercise more, etc.! :)

But to the point I do see your point about the lack of their valid point though... ;)

Agreed, would be nice to give up. One day!:)

But it would be like asking everyone on the ship to give up drinking

Both are addictions.

Happy Days to you

Yes, you mentioned UK.

Yes, your post referred to the effects in the UK.

But no, the link specifically referred to Canada, in a third-hand way even. Let me quote it for you:

This terrible process started with the ban on smoking. Labour was warned that it would result in pub closures, but went ahead regardless. The people it was supposed to protect – the bar staff – have suffered catastrophic job losses as a result (though this is rarely noticed, as so many bar staff are non-unionised, cash-in-hand foreigners). Labour knew this would happen, as the state of British Columbia in Canada had introduced a similar ban a couple of years earlier and the immediate result had been bar closures and (I have been told) one third of bar jobs lost.

If you are referring to me Karen, I had no intention of being rude. If you see it came off as being rude I apologize to you.

This debate has been a long one, and now school is out, well you can understand.

Please explain the rudeness. I think that I was quite polite. I have actually read everyone's comments in this thread with great interest. These two posts chose not to add anything interesting, i.e. constructive.

Surely they can pass by these types of posts as easily as I can pass by their posts.

No, I specifically quoted the member in question (twice). I felt his/her comments were a little rude, and I mentioned it.

These smoking threads are just ridiculously rude most of the time. No one listens and everyone's talking. It's just so sad...

Nevermind. Carry on. Thanks.

Not a surprise at all. Choices and rights. You pretty much summed it up there!

If it is a little more inconvenient to the smoker, hey I can live with that.

As long as we have one area, then that would be totally fine with me.
