I am not reading this entire thread

I am giving serious advice here.....

Do not use your debit card at any street side ATM !!!

Rome Venice you name it don't use it

They have sniffers on the ATMs and you won't know what hit you as you will be on a cruise and out if Internet reach for the most part

The bad guys know this

So go I side a reputable bank should you need extra cash

Better yet use credit xards

We agree! it is always better to use bank ATMs. It is also wise for folks to do a little research on the internet about ATM "sniffers" and how to spot the things. And by the way, we also have sniffer problems inside the USA.

Yes we do hank and I was not implying that we don't rather just relating my recent experience ( and I knew better too after about 20 trips abroad!)

Also, Those drive up ATMs that are outside your neighborhood bank branch are more than vulnerable

The cases I have read about seem to indicate that those drive up/walk up ATMs in better or lets say more secure neighborhoods are the most vulnerable because people don't think they could be tampered with

A freestanding non bank ATM at some gas station etc is a whole other issue and best avoided like the plague

Cash in pocket from home

Credit cards

Prepayment as much as possible

ATMs inside banks and IMHO during banking hours in case of any problems

Is really the way the smart traveler operates abroad and at home too
