Bill,

Very funny and informative review so far, however, you have mentioned only that you and your bride took the Florence on your own tour, and prior to that you mentioned Florence was your least favorite....please explain as my bride and I have scheduled this tour on our own, and are very interested in your comments, pro and con

No need for the thumbs down Bill, dont get stroppy, i just think people make the picture? you can get plain stills from carnival.

Garth Brooks, 'friends in low places' my new fave song, i must have heard it every day on the ship - piano man, cheesy stage guy, karioke, legends night etc. it just reminds me of the holiday.

Anyway, I WAS at the cabinet after muster, and i collected and paid for the shirt and shared a drink with musicmom for her trouble. i met lots of people off the boards, so the question is, where were you?

BTW, respect for being up 5.30am, we were still out at that time a few nights as well!

If you read the last installment of my review here it explains fully what went wrong in Florence.

Hey Bill,

Have you checked out the thread "Bad Liberty Cruise" yet? Read it when you get a chance and let me know what you think.

Sheryl

I hadn't checked it out but just did because you mentioned it. I know from having asked our waitress how the maiden voyage was and she giggled. Obviously there were some problems that needed to be worked out in various parts of the ship both functionally and with the staff.

We all heard about the broken pipe which caused a minor flood in the casino.

Of course that wouldn't have bothered me because we don't gamble, but I know it would have bothered you :-). [ Remember that film with Sly Stallone where he has to get rid of some nut job who has taken hostages in a supermarket. The guy tells Stallone to get out or he'll blow the place up. Stallone replies, "I don't care, I don't shop here." :-) ]

Now I think this poster was referring to the first sailing. I do know that there was a woman on our sailing whose luggage never showed up. If you recall, a notice was placed in every room on the ship to ask if anyone had their luggage by mistake. As it turned out it was the airlines fault (it usually is and that is why we always take a carry on with a three day reserve of clothing and toiletries, when we go on a cruise.). We spoke with this woman in the aft hottub. She told us that Carnival actually had given her $500 credit to get some new clothing, either ashore or in their on board store. (Of course can you see someone walking around dressed head to toe in stuff saying Carnival all over it? :-) ). She didn't use it because someone whom she was traveling with in her group was the same size and was able to lend her stuff.

I believe her stuff arrived the second day we were in Venice and was delivered to the ship and promptly to her room. Now that was the only instance I know on OUR cruise of someone's stuff being lost.

Other than that, the woman seemed upset more about the journey to the ship than to the ship itself. She never came back on and that thread was subsequently taken over by a bunch of off topic idiots having their own private fun.

All I know is we had problems with our trip (more on the way home than on the way there) and we booked our flight arrangements completely independently. (We always do because in our experience it is a lot less than going through Carnival and the TAs will even tell you that if they are competent.). On the way home, even though we had reserved seats for our second leg home from Amsterdam to JFK, we were told we may be bumped because the flight was overbooked. This is a policy of the airlines at this time so as not to have empty seats. Their profit margin is narrow to nil.

The worst that would have happened would have been that we would have had to stay over in Amsterdam for a night or two. Gee, that would have been terrible!!! NOT!!!! We even were debating whether to give up our seats to someone who really had to get home at a specific time and take the free flight credit. KLM would have put us up in an hotel and given us spending money. Sounded good to me, but as bad luck would have it, they put us on the plane. BTW, I think KLM is one of the two or three top airlines in the universe. A seven hour flight went by as if it was only two hours. No wonder it was 7PM when we left Amsterdam and was only 9 PM when we arrived at Kennedy. Felt like it was the middle of the night though. :-)

Thanks again for the great review and wonderful pictures.

One more question:

When looking at your pictures of the ship I saw the ones of the coffee diner. What were some of the charges there for coffee drinks if you can remember? I didn't figure it was complimentary.

THanks again for all of your time.

Jody :)

Bill: Loved your review!! I took a "stinkin" art history class in college. Couldn't figure out why it would be required for my degree. Anyway....about 2 weeks into the class, I vowed to go to Europe and see the art and cathedrals. That's been "several" years ago.....thanks for the reminder!! Now - how to talk hubby into going to Europe!!

"We didn't use it." You were the exception. There were about 14 computer ports for the Internet (about .50 per minute), and most were fully used so there was a 10-20 minute wait. Occasionally the system went down.

The last thing I want to do is look at any kind of screen, esp. Big Brother on the Lido deck. However, I can understand your need to keep in touch with a minor. The internet cafe is located behind a door in a corner of the Cabinet room. The service was out for the first three days of the cruise, I didn't care, so I didn't ask why. The cost is the usual highway robbery ( or piracy since we're at sea :-) for use on a ship.

We really enjoyed Cannes. It is a combination of Rodeo Drive and historic Rome, combining some beautiful and historic buildings with an upscale crowd. We did have an expensive lunch at 3,400 Le Cruissetes (spelling is off) a place called Palac De Englais (check spelling) , across from the Carleton on the beach side. It was wonderful and surprisingly large portions, causing us to skip the regular dinner. The food was marvelous, my wife called it the best meal she ever had, and we did feel fancy. I was waiting the whole meal for some anti-American indication but didn't get it, as my French waiter patiently explained various dishes in English and made some good recommendations. The worst that happened was a little wait for my coffee, and the strange sight of encountering my wife in the rest room (there is a part unisex where the faucets are and separate toilets). I liked the people and we liked Cannes.

As to money, I didn't see the sense of paying for an expensive excursion to Monaco or Nice, and would have had a tough time waking up my teenagers. One of his friends went on an excursion to Nice and Ez, a suburb of Cannes (pronounced by her nice and easy). Besides the money, these excursions seemed to be a lot of driving when you had a beautificul city right in front of you.

Bobbi indicated Florence was the worst stop. I think the ship probably did the worst job at Florence, and the excursions were generally disappointing. However, the people that arranged drivers on their own in Florence on this and other cruises I know, generally had a wonderful time. This is a historic city with much to see and do. It is a city better seen with a taxi and a knowledgeable tour guide rather than on a big bus with 120 people and a guide trying to keep track of everybody.

If you want to see the David or go to the museum, make arrangements through a private tour or through the museum since you do not want to brave the lines for tickets in the summer.

We took this tour b/c the one we REALLY looked forward to was cancelled--Girona/Dali museum.....This was ok--it started at 9:00am, drove along the coast of Spain, then we boarded a public ship for the t/fer to the beach. LOTS of jellyfish in the water. We got on the beach about 11:00. Costa del Sol is a very cute little beach town. Not too many tourists. We had about 3 1/2 hrs there--it was enough. One town up--I 4get the name would have been better since it was more of a tourist town and looked like it had more. The bus ride back (no ship to the bus-then back to Liberty) was about 1 1/2 hrs. We got back it was about 4:30.... We had been to Barcelona b4 and just wanted to see other things.....Didn't include lunch....Restaurants along the waterfront...

BTW---the original poster on this thread--you were lucky!! You got razors and toothbrushes!! We just got a couple of packets of not much!! I'm used to all that stuff and a shower cap--none this time!

No it was not complimentary. Think Starbucks prices. It was in that range and had a similar kind of menu.

Bill did a great job, but I'll try to answer a few questions.

1. The adjoining couple liked the Tuscany tour. People however "loved" the private tours they arranged so consider that. The level of satisfaction on the private tours people arranged was higher.

2. The beach tour was not on the itinerary. Unfortunately the ship left Barcelona at 5:00, so you'd have a tough time doing the beach and then going into town for sightseeing. A combined trip would make sense.

3. One of my son's friends took the Nice and Ez trip (pronounced Nice and Easy) and liked it.

4. Dubrovnik, Venice, Barcelona, are good ports to walk on your own. Naples, taking a hydrofoil to Capri or an auto tour through the Amalfi coast, works out, Florence doing a private tour arranged beforehand makes sense, and Messina, a cab tour to Taomina is good.

I printed out everything to share with my husband. I told him he has a big reading assignment ahead!

Regarding ship tours:

Did you hear anything about the Tuscany tours?

Did you hear anything about the Costa Brava beach tour in Barcelona?

What about the Nice and Eze tour in Cannes?

Sounds like we can do a lot on our own too. Thanks!

There is no curfew in Venice but the night life is not incredible. It is not a party to 3:00 in the morning type of place. I probably would take a cab back to the ship because the port area is somewhat dank and isolated though no one had a problem to my knowledge.

Good review SanFranBayCruiser! We sailed the second sailing beginning on Aug 1. I’ll go ahead & add to this discussion my thoughts on our cruise. I booked this cruise to celebrate my father’s 80th bday with our entire family (3 of us kids plus our kids for a total of 15 in 7 cabins). Unfortunately my father had to have an emergency pacemaker operation & could not depart with us on July 27 for a 4 day stay in Rome prior to the cruise. My brother & his wife stayed in Calif with my parents & the rest of us went ahead. We were unsure of the procedure for late arrivals to the ship so we said nothing until we boarded on Aug 1. We told the purser my parents had missed their flight to Rome (mostly true) & were told they could join us in Venice. As it turned out my parents could not make the trip but my brother & his wife did join us in Venice. So we continued with our party of 13 & called home daily. I rented an international cell phone thru Verizon & it was a blessing to have it available. Had service most of the time.

Our time in Rome was great! We stayed at the Hotel Concordia. Very clean & central location with a wonderful owner, Roberto who was friendly, kind, & helpful. Breakfast on the terrace was included. We walked a lot in Rome! This was the first trip for our 3 kids to Europe (18, 15 and 11) so we did all the usual things – Trevi, Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, Vatican, ancient Rome. The weather was hot & humid. We were told to buy bottled water at a grocery store – much more reasonably priced. We drank loads. We found a lot of discrepancy in prices for Coca Light & bottled water. We did an organized tour of ancient Rome & it was well worth it. Excellent guide. The Vatican was awesome! Seeing the Pope’s tomb was more of an emotional experience than I expected. We arrived about 1000 & the line moved very quickly. The 500 meter walk to the museums & Sistine chapel was hot & we were approached by lots of people handing out leaflets & beggars. Had to remind the kids to keep purse close to them & not take anything from anyone. We ate in the cafeteria in the museum building. It was fine. Don’t forget the dress code for the churches.

The hotel booked us transport from airport to hotel – 60euro for the minivan. Cab to Vatican 15 euro. We had a great pasta dinner with excellent wine at Café Romano. Ate at Toula one night – VERY expensive but lovely. You are never rushed during a meal in Italy! Sometimes we had to beg for the check because we couldn’t sit any longer!

I hate to admit it but did eat at the Hard Rock one night. I was out voted by the kids who were craving burgers.

We arrived at the dock before 2 pm so the line wasn’t bad. After boarding we were paged to the Purser & told there was a problem with our luggage. While being loaded onto the ship one of our bags had gone overboard! It turned out to be our 11 year old daughter’s suitcase. Everything was soaked & when she saw all her new outfits & shoes she sobbed. What a mess! They washed all the clothes & returned them that evening. A couple of things shrunk & the shoes took a couple days to dry out. The suitcase was also dried but will go in the trash as it just doesn’t smell the same!

Now for some general impressions and random thoughts:

There are A LOT of people on this ship. We have cruised many times on various lines & ships & had actually been on the Carnival Conquest Feb 04. So we knew it was big! But this cruise seemed more crowded to me. Often bumping into people in main traffic areas on decks. And there were TONS of kids on our sailing. Lots of teens. The teen area was packed every night. There were kids running in the halls & playing on the elevators at times without adult supervision. The way this ship is designed can be confusing. You can’t get from here to there on certain decks. The pool area was crowded on sea days & we were only able to find lounges on the upper decks away from the pool. We booked Harry’s for a sea say. It was fabulous! The dessert was amazing, the martini perfect. Well worth the extra bucks. I had a massage one day & it was great. The gym was crowded. I waited one day for 30 minutes for a treadmill. People did not observe the 30 min. limit & no one from the staff said anything. Sea days were the worst. We had the 8 pm sitting in the Golden dining room. Our wait staff was excellent & fun. And yes, they sang every night. The food was okay with occasional excellent choices. The desserts were not that good. We had a balcony cabin on the Verandah deck. I would advise against. The Lido deck, pool is right above 8328 & we had to listen to chairs being moved along the decks constantly. This was not a quiet cabin by any means. I won’t stay on this deck again. Lesson learned. My kids had a blast & met lots of others their age. My 15 year old son enjoyed the O2 Club activities most nights. Get the individual schedule for the Club O2 – it’s not always in Capers. The casino was pretty crowded & the slots were not loose for me however I heard that someone won 20K one night. Wish it had been me! Photographs – we did some B&Ws that were great. Somehow we avoided long lines – there are several photographers in multiple locations. The backgrounds differ so you can choose what you like best. We did do the soda cards for the kids. I always feel a bit ripped off but it does add up. We probably could have just bought 2 instead of 3. We did have a medical emergency the night we sailed from Messina. A passenger had a heart attack. They turned the ship around & we stopped near some other island. The person was taken off in a lifeboat to shore. The ship made up the time by picking up speed & we were on time for the next port. Also a passenger was hit by a motor scooter in Messina crossing the street from the dock. Sprained ankle I heard. The Internet! Nightmare! They had lots of technical trouble with the WiFi & the internet café. It was down for 3 days. There were always lines. Lots of people couldn’t get connected on their own laptops. They brought a tech guy on in one port & after that it worked for the most part. Some people asked for refunds.

We did do shore excursions. Usually when it’s my husband & I we get a car & do our own thing. We were a little reluctant to do that with the ports being short & the risk of missing the ship. We did hear about one couple who’s car broke down & they missed the ship. So we played it safe. Naples we did the afternoon tour of Pompeii. Excellent. Dubrovnik we took the ship shuttle. Traffic was bad. We ended up exploring the old walled city & enjoyed ourselves. Made sure to get shuttle bus back timely. Messina – my father is from Sicily also! It was my first time in Sicily & I loved it. We took the tour to Taormina. It was lovely & so beautiful. We still had time to walk around Messina when we got back. The stores definitely close for 2 hours in the afternoon so we didn’t buy much! Venice we did on our own. We were docked outside the city & it was quite a walk to town. We rented a water taxi for our whole group & had a little tour then were dropped off at St Marks Square. Loved having the overnight. We had dinner ashore. Livorno we did the Florence/Pisa tour. I was very disappointed. We rushed thru Florence first – I so wanted to shop. The lunch I could do without. Then to Pisa where we were warned repeatedly about theft. I was getting a little paranoid! The tower is great but that’s it. I would rather have free time in Florence & reverse this order. My sister did Florence on your own which is basically a bus ride back & forth. She had a great day shopping. In Cannes we did the Monaco-Monte Carlo tour. Wow! Talk about big money! We went to the casino for a short time. It is beautiful & something to see. Postcard perfect. In Barcelona we did the Costa Brava tour. Bus & boat. It was okay. Kind of a long day but our guide was quite nice. The beach is beautiful & of course there are many topless women which the kids did notice!

Yes, they did have a past guest reception. It was Sat Aug 6 for our sailing. They dropped off the invite & the pins in our cabin.

The did have another water leak in the casino on our sailing. They closed the casino for about an hour.

I also liked cruise director John Heald’s humor.

Debarkation was done very well. We were told we could even carry our own bags off in the morning & we did. Piece of cake.

We did purchase transfers to the airport from Carnival for a pricy 65 a piece. You could do better booking your own private transfer. Try http://www.romaclick.com/shuttle-service/Rome-airport-transfers.htm

We wore shorts in ports. No problem except for the churches.

2 formal nights – the rest pretty much casual. I packed too many non-casual outfits. The Piano Bar guy is fantastic. The Victoria Lounge has karaoke.

I had room service every morning – it’s a continental type breakfast. They were always on time.

My sister had a fill on the ship. Don’t know the cost.

you pass the stromboli volvano on the way out of Messina about 7:45 pm

The problems with the Sail & Sign cards the first two days was a pain. I also stood in that Purser line a few times. Also if you have a magnetic closure on your purse, it will erase your card & you can’t get into your cabin!

The ports on the cruise were great! I looked at lots of itineraries & think this was one of the best offered.

Your comments on Florence/Pisa tour: is the tour bad or just they didn't give you time to shop in Florence?

You said your sister had a "fill" on the ship. What is it?:o

be "filed in"

I was reading Carnival's shore excursion description for Florence On Your Own. Do they actually take you to the Duomo and to the Holy Cross Square or am I misinterpreting? If they do, how long did this take before you were left on your own?

Thanks.

If you are booked on a ship tour, I believe that you may cancel for a full refund, prior to sailing. Not sure of the exact number of days prior. If you are considering that, check with Carnival regarding their cancellation policy.

You can cancel right on the website. Log into your trip page on Carnival.com and it will show your trips you have signed up for, There is a place to click on change or modify your trips. I cancelled one and it was very easy. My CC was credited a couple of days later.

The ride on the bus (air conditioned Mercedes Benz) takes about an hour and a half through the Tuscan countryside. As we are on our way there, our tour guide gave a nice synopsis as well as history of where we were and where we were going. She also had a low opinion of Florentines (because she was married to one. :-) ).

The bus stopped once at a rest stop so that those of us with weak bladders could relieve ourselves. Then we entered Florence proper. The bus was required to stop at a place on the south bank where all the tour buses must stay.

From there we took a brief (about 1/4 mile walk) to St. Croce Square. At that point the TG described the area made a few suggestions and stated what time we all had to meet back right by Dante's statue outside St Croce church. (3:45). From there we headed out on our own.

We first wallked up on the north bank of the Arno towards the Ponte Vecchio, looked at the stores on the bridge for a while, and then went over to the Uffizi. We had 12 noon reservations for the Uffizi which were honored right on time. We spent about an hour there and then walked to the Piazza della Signoria which was mobbed, got the requisite photos of the reproductions of The David and some other statues, looked at the Palazzo Vecchio of the Medici and then headed up one of the main streets towards The Duomo.

We stopped and had some Panini and pizzas for lunch at a nice stand, had gelato for dessert and then kept walking. The lines to get into the Duomo were quite long, and we opted not to bother going in. We stayed in the Piazza duomo, looked for a while at the Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery, looked in a few shops at some local artisans as well as some contemporary paintings.

We had reservations at 3PM for the L'academia, and since it was running about a half hour late, we could not go in or we'd miss the bus back. That was the biggest disappointment.

Instead, on the way back, we took a side walk over to the Florence Synagogue, which is quite nice and was one of the first free-standing synagogues in Western Europe (not attached to a house as the ones in Venice and Dubrovnik are). Unfortunately it was too late to get in to see the Synagogue.

We then met back at the designated place, got back on the bus and went into the hills above Florence for some beautiful views, and to look at some of the villas up in that area.

Many people took a nap on the bus on the way back to the ship.

Actually I'm Bill. As with Penn and Teller, I'm the one who speaks and Bobbi only gesticulates. :-)

I agree that the ship was not informative about the Florence on your own tour. "On your own" to me meant that there was going to be transportation there and transportation back, and we'd be able to leave at varying times depending on how long we wanted to stay (as with the tenders in Cannes eg.). Since the times for departure from Florence were indicated, I assumed that we'd be able to stay in Florence till around 4:45 and not have to leave by 3:45.

We booked our reservations for The Uffizi and L'Academia about two months in advance on the website http://www.Tickitaly.com Based on the times of arrival and departure of the ship, I figured noon for one museum and 3pm for the other would give us sufficient time to see the things we wanted in the museums. Even with those times and the limited amount of time in Florence

I thought those reservations would do for an "appetizer" taste of both.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF IN THEIR BROCHURE, CARNIVAL MADE IT CLEAR THAT "ALL BUSES MUST LEAVE FLORENCE NO LATER THAN 4PM TO MAKE IT BACK TO THE SHIP BEFORE DEPARTURE FOR ROME" but they didn't.

Florence deserved more time than we were given. The walk through the two wings of the Uffizi gallery, WITHOUT STOPPING TO EVEN APPRECIATE SOME OF THE MASTERPIECES, but merely going past them takes a minimum of about an hour. That is no way to appreciate some of the examples of Michelangelo, Raphael, El Greco and others. It is doing touring by checklist.

We were constantly keeping one eye on our watches, so as to be able to simply scan the downtown area without overlooking something. This was with only putting five things in Florence on our MUST SEE list: Uffizi, L'Accademia, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Vecchio, The Duomo and Baptistery.

It was a rush and a taxi wouldn't have helped any for these, since they are all in the central area where only foot traffic is allowed (except for perhaps a few Vespas, and at any rate the crowds are walking in the streets, so even the small cars have to crawl.)

I think Carnival needs to reassess their ports of call on this cruise as well as the order. A day at sea prior to going back to Rome would have been much better than the three day three city marathon at the end.
