rslinky Posted October 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2014 Doing an Alaska cruise in 2015. What decks can you go out at front of ship. Prefer quieter viewing areas than where everyone usually gathers.
godawgs2012 Posted October 16, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2014 (edited) I know on the Westerdam (same class of ship) there is a forward observation deck that you can go out on decks 5, 6, and 7. I am not sure if you can go all the way forward on deck 9 (deck 8 is the bridge so no forward access) and then there is the forward observation deck on deck 11. Sometimes, they will open the bow on your glacier cruising day (or they did last time I was in Alaska - that was I believe 2009 though) which is pretty awesome but if you don't get there early it is crowded. BearInStPete Posted October 16, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 16, 2014 There is also an open observation area on deck 9 in front of the gym as well.
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 16, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2014 When we are able to, we like to go out on the deck in front of the gym.

I thought that area was open - just didn't want to give the OP wrong info! Glad to hear it's still avaliable. I feel like I read on one thread where the small forward decks were closed at one point although I could be wrong.
zookiebird Posted October 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 16, 2014 JMO but you also might want to consider deck 3 (Promenade Deck). It wasn't crowded and those of us who were there had plenty of room to move around with good picture taking spots, especially at Glacier Bay. frankc98376 Posted October 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 16, 2014 Most cruises we weren't allowed in front on 5, 6 or 7. We ended up in front of the gym on 9. WE were told on Oosterdam that security prevented access to the outside forward areas. The bow should be open in Glacier Bay or at glaciers. Directions to the bow will be put out that morning. Right -- most of the forward areas of the ship are only open for Glaciers and Panama Canal cruises.
sail7seas Posted October 16, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 16, 2014 When we are able to, we like to go out on the deck in front of the gym. I like it out there, too. Not that many people seem to know about it or think they can go there for scenic viewing. :)
