DannyDisneyFreak Posted November 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 15, 2014 So I just realized we will be docked in Skagway on our Alaska cruise on Memorial Day, will this effect the local shops and attractions to be open? Do you think this is a good or a bad thing? Also, will be in Juneau the day before, Sunday. How do you think Memorial Day weekend will effect our days in port? Kamloops50 Posted November 15, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) Because the Alaska season is very short . The stores will be open to make the most of the tourists . The only thing closed will be government offices like the Post Office . They will have a special celebration for memorial day. bonvoyagie Posted November 15, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Well from looking at the port schedules you will be with the same ships in both Juneau and Skagway. Two RCCL ships, a Regents, and a Silversea - so there will be approx. 7000 tourists in each town - they are used to having closer to 10,000 so the towns will feel a wee bit more empty. I looked at the websites for Skagway and Juneau and they show nothing special for Memorial Day in 2015. I see where the White Pass & Yukon RR is running a special Fraser Steam Train at 8:00 AM along with the usual Summit Trains at 8:15 and 12:45 as well as the trains to and from Fraser. These are the ones that most of the bus/train excursions use these trains. Since cruise ships and tourism are such huge money makers in these towns I doubt very much if they would let something like Memorial Day get in the way.:D
