Maasdam NewEngland/Canada and 18 year old

My daughter (18 year old) and I will be taking this cruise early in July. I understand that she is not permitted to drink alcohol. My question is what is she permitted to do? Can she sit in the piano bar listening while I have a cocktail, dance in the Crowsnest? etc. I want her to be aware of the do's and dont's before we go.:D

Thanks

Your daughter can go into any of the lounges with---or without---you. There may be a curfew in the Crow's Nest later in the evening.

Since this is such a port-intensive itinerary, she may not want to stay out all that late anyway.

Enjoy this cruise! I've done it a few times, both as the 10-day out of NYC, and the 7-day from Montreal to Boston. There's lots to see and do here.

Thanks for the reply Ruth. I was checking out the menus posted by Crew News on another thread and HAL has many interesting "mocktails" so I'm sure she will enjoy those. Here in Alberta the drinking age is 18 but when in Rome... She is looking forward to our time in Quebec as they too have 18 as a drinking age. Not that any of us are big drinkers! :D

In HAL document, under the heading Shipboard Life, I found the following;

"Casino: A wonderful world of chance, skill and luck awaits

you in our Casino. A gamut of games from sizzling slots with

huge progressive jackpots to a parade of poker games is there

for your enjoyment. Our friendly international staff will teach

you how to play, entertain you in a tournament or patiently

wait while you decide whether to hold or fold. The Casino is

not open in port and certain restricted waters and you must be

18 or over to play."

As I don't normally gamble and can't stand the smoking, we won't be in the casino!

I DO NOT recommend to a eighteen y/o girl to go out alone in Quebec City or any Ports in every itinerary that cruise compagnies offer.

A responsible adult should be aware of this obvious safety measure.

Suggestion : Buy a bottle of wine for dinner time and share a glass or two with your daughter.

This is not a good suggestion to make.

Since the drinking age on HAL ships is 21, and the wine would be served on the ship, the OP could find herself in trouble for serving wine to someone underage. She could be fined, or even put off the ship.

I asked about this myself when I took my (then) 19 1/2 y.o. granddaughter on a HAL Europe cruise. The legal drinking age on land was 18, but not on the ship.

It puts the wine steward in a difficulty position. (S)he knows they are not to serve alcohol to people under 21 but what to do when the adult asks for a second glass for the underage person with whom they are dining??

Hi Ruth !

On this line I agree with you :

…and the wine would be served on the ship, the OP could find herself in trouble for serving wine to someone underage. She could be fined, or even put off the ship…

But I don't understand why a father/mother would it not educate his own child and teach him how to drink responsibly ?

IMHO, some laws are sometimes outdated and/or stupids.

Rest assured Ruth, I'm still a very good boy ! :D

I would never ask the wine steward to pour a glass for an underage person. I agree that this puts them in a difficult position.

I would never allow her to go out in a strange city or any city alone. In Quebec city and Montreal I will be with her at all times. If we are off the ship for a late lunch in Quebec City I will allow her to have a glass of wine or better yet apple cider if she wishes. :D

Laurie,

By all means, enjoy a wonderful late lunch in Quebec City. There is some fabulous food/very good restaruants and a glass of wine with Mom never hurt too many 18 year olds that I know. ;)

Have a great cruise. I've done that itinerary many times and never tire of it.
