mek Posted June 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2004 As an FYI, there are automated machines on board the ship that convert foreign currency. It accepts bills only and won't convert to or from Rubbles.
IRIS FAYE Posted June 20, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2004 I heard most accept United States money. Is currency exchange a MUST? I planned to bring small bills in good condition. Is this a wise move? All excursions will be via the ship. Thanks again for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!! mek Posted June 20, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted June 20, 2004 Some places would accept dollars, but we did run in to some areas that wouldn't. A few places in Russia, would only accept Rubles and no credit cards. Peterhoff was the only place in Russia where I needed local currency for the toilets, but they had an attendant who would take $1 in return for several Rubles. Also in Helsinki, I went to Mc Donalds and you needed a token for the toilets. In Estonia the cabs would only accept local currency or Euros. Since we missed Germany, I don't know what they would have done, but left home with Euros and Danish currency so we used them in Denmark, Helsinki, and Estonia. The machine on the ship will convert currency other than US $.
adgtravel Posted June 21, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2004 Can I put a 50USD in machine, and get Danish and Estonia currency, and some Euros all at once? What is the fee for this? Do you get a better rate from the Purser? Can you get Rubles from Purser? Thanks
Hulagirl Posted June 21, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2004 When we used these machines on Golden P. in the Med, it would exchange the money into the currency of the next port visited. You couldn't get money for all ports at once. Probably at the pursers office you can, but not out of the machine. It really was convenient. Have no idea about the Rubles. But I do know there are some countries that won't allow you to exchange into their money. The example for this was Turkey. We couldn't get any Turkish money until we were there. This may be the same with Russia. jebjab Posted June 24, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2004 The ships are not allowed to carry Rubbles on board, as the Russian currency is not allowed out of the country. At the end of the cruise you can also exchange any leftover foreign currency back into US dollars at the Purser's Desk. Judy

mek Posted June 24, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted June 24, 2004 You can only get one type of currency with each transaction. The day before we returned to Copenhagen, I converted my Euros into Danish, (which I found out wasn't necessary the next day), so it converts money other than $'s. dzcovery Posted July 2, 2004 #9 Share Posted July 2, 2004 The exchange rate on the ship isn't bad, but they charge you $1.50 for each transaction. I only got currency for sweden because I found that I could use my U.S. dollars or a credit card every place that we went. However, no one wants U. S. coins, they only want the green stuff. Be sure to take plenty of ones and fives, because if you buy something and don't have the exact amount you're going to get the local currency back as your change.
