Supermarket near port in Venice?

I downloaded the wonderful Italy maps from the "OSM and" site. They are free as long as you only download 5 (countries, I believe, not cities), and once downloaded to your device they can be used off line. (I'm using a Kindle Fire, but smartphones and other devices can probably handle them.) The Coop store is marked on the Venice map if you search for Fondamenta di Santa Chiara or Piazzale Roma or other nearby location. Assuming the map is correct (and it looks to be pretty detailed and accurate for things I've looked at) the Coop on Fond di Santa Chiara looks to be close to one of the vaporetto landing areas closest to the modern Calatrava-designed stepped high pedestrian bridge (Ponte della Constituzione). If you take the 5 minute 1,50 euro one way People Mover from near the ship (some walking probably involved to reach the People Mover) you would get off at Piazalle Roma. Look for the bridge, head towards but not on it, go left and look for the second set of vaporetto stops. The Coop is right around there, although I'm not sure if you need to be at the street level or water level, probably the first. Calle Volto is the nearest cross street according to the map. There are multiple vaporetto platforms in the area of Santa Chiara/Piazalle Roma, numbered A through G. I think you want to be near A, but take that with a grain of salt, as I hear some things change often in Venice!

With this info, plus the info provided above by other posters, you should be able to check into the ship, go back out, find the place, buy some things, and get back in maybe an hour or hour and a half maximum. I'd be jumping on one of those vaporettos (the 4 and 5 are good options for certain stops - quicker than the slower 1 and 2). You might, however, want to ask when Oceania's emergency drill is. Oceania usually does it just before departure, but it can vary. You're expected to go, and should! Also, if you go back out at night, be careful. When we're there (late Sept. on a Sunday) the People Mover stops running at 9, and the last Alilaguna boat TO St. Marks leaves the port at 5:26 (but comes back much later). Know your options!

I recommend the OSM and maps.

Enjoy Oceania. That's our line of choice, although our trip next month is on another line.

It is actually pretty easy to find as long as you do not walk right by the small door :). When giving directions we find it best to just tell folks to walk down to the Grand Canal adjacent to the vaporetto piers (also called the ACTV) and walk to your left (keeping the canal immediately on your right). After a couple of blocks you will see the small COOP sign (its in a building on your left).

So if I go to the COOP to buy a few bottles of wine with my carry on on wheels, I won't be allowed in to the shop with it will I?

Doughty3,

If you read no 19 and 20 on this thread the case was discussed. The returning suggestion was to go to the checkout desk and ask if you could leave the case there. Buy the items you want then put into case once paid for. [emoji4]

The policy varies....sometimes with the manager on duty. But it is very common in many countries (and with many merchants) to require you to "check" any large bags when you enter a market. So you will be allowed in to shop, but may have to leave your bag with the cashier or at the office.

The links above are to 3 screenshots from Google Earth that I captured of the store and area around it, plus someone else's picture of the store from the front. I'm posting them to help people find their way from Piazalle Roma, and get an idea of how far the store is (not far). People Mover elevated "train" can be seen running across the water to the port, which is at maybe 10:00 but off the page. Not totally sure if building next to it (near Piazalle Roma) is where you enter/exit, but assume so.

Hi roothy123,

They are fantastic, thank you so much. That really shows the distances. I've taken screen shots of your photos so I have them with me when I get there. :)
