trying to tie down a day on the Amalfi coast. So many recommendations not sure which company to use. Prices all pretty similar.

Which would be better.... those starting in Ravello and lunching in Positano or those starting in Sorrento and lunching in Ravello? I'm sure we will see the same coastline.. just not sure which way to see it!

No right or wrong, but simply a matter of personal preference. Personally, we would not waste time in Sorrento (which is not actually on the Amalfi Coast). Lunch really becomes a driver of your solution and its a matter of where and what cafe/restaurant. If you are looking for a really high end lunch experience there are some excellent restaurants in the region (including some places in both Positano and Ravello. If it is just a matter of grabbing a bite a a decent cafe then you also have options. And it all gets further complicated by private tour operators (and even frequent tourists) who have other favorite eating places outside the towns.

Thank you.. One lunch is in Positano..not named. Another is quoted as italian restaurant La Tagliata. I'm considering Seeamalficoast - lunch in Positano (the cheapest of my quotes at €300).. Joebanana is the most expensive at €400! Sorrento 1st Choice is on my list too at €380!

Totally agree with both these points. We loved our tour with Carmine of seeamalficoast, loved our lunch at La Tagliata, and didn't much enjoy Sorrento. Sorrento might be worthwhile if you are really into shopping. Carmine did a great job of taking us to the most beautiful, unique scenery.

Let me toss in another thought (from a guy that seldom to ever uses a private tour). If you are going to pay top dollar for a professional guided tour then you might want to put a lot of faith in your tour operator. If not, then why are you booking them? These tour drivers/guides are in the region every day, know where to go, and often know the best restaurants for a relatively fast lunch. Keep in mind that some well known popular tourist restaurants are vastly overpriced and often can involve slow lunches that can use up several hours of your day (fine for us, but not for many folks). There are always hidden gems (when it comes to food) and a good tour guide will know the right places. This is the one weakness that we face when doing our usual DIY stuff on cruises....in that we sometimes have problems getting the latest local restaurant info (not an issue when we do land trips).

This is what we did.

Often it is the local in any place who know where to go.

When we took our tour of the Coast we left it up to our guide/driver and we were very pleased.

When I traveled extensively for business, the locals knew best where we should dine. This is why I will usually ask tour guides for recommendations for lunch and dinner if we are in the city for more than one day after our tour.

Yes I got a quote €400 - which is a little too expensive - seeamalfitcoast is €300 with great reviews on trip advisor

Sorry this doesn't work for you.

For us our priority was the tour and not on dining so we spent more on the tour.

This was offset by a lovely lunch but far less pricey than what you quoted.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

we joined 6 others on our rollcall and went with Italyshoresdrivers, had a great tour but lunch was extra, we asked for ideas from driver and he took us to a great place in positano. we used this company for 3 tours during our cruise and they did a fantastic job.

not interested in shopping.... so will perhaps ask to miss that part of Sorrento... but would love to see the views from the peninsula around Sorrento..were you able to change the itinerary to suit what you wanted with Carmine?

Here's another for the list…… we have used APTours for all of our visits to this area - thats 5 times !!!

They provide the same great service but for less $$$. You can, of course, customize your day - but as suggested above, it is best to rely on their expertise as they know the area and what you can and cannot accomplish in your time frame.

We have and will continue to recommend APTours - they are that good !!!!

Absolutely! Carmine could not have been more flexible. When we booked, we asked to visit Agerola, DH's grandmother's birthplace. Carmine was happy to take us there, and was quite knowledgeable about the area, even though it's not part of his usual tours.

Not only that... while in Agerola, we ended up meeting the town historian, who took us to city hall to look for family records, then called up some family members to meet us and show us the family church. This took some time, and Carmine adapted his tour on the fly to accommodate these delightful surprises. He is one of the best private tour guides we have ever worked with.
