Refugees in Budapest?

We started our cruise to Amsterdam in Budapest. We arrived on June 11th, a few days early so we spent time sightseeing all over the city.

 

With the current refugee situation, I am just curious if river cruise people there in recent weeks have encountered them while in the city.

 

We feel so badly for those refugees. I think we would have spent our sightseeing time bringing them food and other staples. It is just heartbreaking to watch the news each evening.

We were there the end of August. On a bus trip that passed the train station we saw some, but not like recently on TV. We stayed at Le Meridien, and there was a man sleeping in the park with his belongings about 20 feet away. When we left for the airport on Tuesday, we saw a few men sleeping in the parks. BTW, no women!

Our cruise director mention there are some problems with getting busses/motorcoaches around Passau and Regensburg because they are needed in Munich to help move the refugees.

I have often seen Viking and Scenic buses in and around Passau. There should not be any problems with ship excurions as the buses are under contract, the problem occurs when swapping ships and trying to find the approrpiate buses.

We were in Budapest on 8/30 and 8/31 and saw small groups of men standing on the street corners. No women or children at that time. The situation changed markedly the next week and has worsened since then.

It does look like the Hungarian government has finished building a fence to keep most of the refugees from crossing through the country.

We were there Sept. 13-14 and had no problems.
