Puerto Montt

In the current Frommer's guide to Argentina there is a health warning abouit flies called "tabanos". They say they are worse in January. Has anyone run into this problem on previous cruises.

Puerto Montt is in Chile isn't it?

I have heard of these and I think they are found in the Lakes districts in Chile around Puerto Montt and other places. They are basically a horse fly. We have similar flies in the US just not in the same quantity. I have been told that they are attracted to dark colors. Make sure you have something to shoo them off handy.

Yes we ran into them in January 2006 on our tour of the area from our cruise ship the Infinity. They are more annoying than anything else. Yes they seem to be attracted to dark blue. We only saw them during our stop for lunch in the rural area of the lakes district - not in any of the towns. Just perfect the Aussie Wave and you are all set.
