Do the Asian's not know about Cruise Critic or something? Doesnt seem to be any reviews from Quantum out of China since July / August! Maybe the onboard internet is really, really crap over there!

I'm sure its sailing every week, so is there no CC members on it ever? Will I be the only CC member on it in March? Hope not! :(

Brint it on!

Cheers

English is the dominant language on CC. You are looking in the wrong place if you want reviews from folks currently sailing on Quantum. A quick search on Baidu turned up some interesting reviews and blog posts from passengers, but none were written in English. You might want to give it a try if you're interested.

You might not want to see the Quantum in China reviews. Certainly those published by English speakers have been quite scary with cruises not resembling any Royal cruise we have enjoyed.

I am married to a Filipino so I am used to the Asian way of thinking... When you have 20 people over for dinner you better be in quick or you will miss out. Having been to Asia many times now, I have learnt to just push back... Without losing my cool, which they don't mind. It's all a game really. Maybe I will be the only Aussie on the cruise for 13 nights. Least I will be able to see everything over the top of them! :D

I have read some reviews by Westerners on these Asian cruises and sometimes I wonder why they bothered going there in the first place. One guy commented the food was too Asian... Hello! Your in Asia! Sheesh..

Thanks for the tips on Baidu, I will go check! :)

Cheers

Was on Quantum two weeks ago for a 5 day cruise.

Think there were two other non Chinese couples on the ship.

Me and the wife had a great time, but we already knew a number of RCL staff (singers, dancers, officers etc).

All the bars on the ship are empty all of the time, bar RCL staff (singers, dancers, other cruise members). China people on cruises do not drink in bars.

By 9-30pm most nights 85% of the passengers were in bed (the Casino is packed all the time).

The vast majority of Chinese people go on cruises for one reason only - shopping in Japan and South Korea.

Sounds great DOCPAUL. I won't be gambling anyway so no issues there! I am expecting the same numbers of Westerners in our cruises I would expect. Wont make me have any less of a fun time. Have to try new things. Were the staff mainly Chinese, or were there Filipinos on there do you know? Mariner had heaps of Filipinos on it last time we sailed on it.

Cheers

In the bars all the staff are either Indian or Filipinos. Only one guy (forgot his name) from China (very nice and very tall) works in Michael's pub.

The head of bars for Quantum is also from India. Because the bar staff have so very little to do on Quantum they are all very friendly to English speakers.

There are a fair few Chinese staff on board, but are the ones who have less contact with passengers (cleaners etc) and I think speak very liitle English.

Because the Chinese do not like food served in courses most go to the Windjammer or 270 for all their meals. I found you can just turn up at any of the restaurants all any time and get a table right away.

One of the bands on board are Filipino and the two singers are father and daughter. Both the father (drummer) and daughter are good singers.

Royal Caribbean employ lots of Filipino as they are generally seem by RCL as very cheap, hardworking, good singers (where they need to be), with very good language and customer skills.

270 is ok for a late breakfast or lunch, but I would stay well clean of the Windjammer as I understand it is a bit of a bum fight. We never went in it.

Most of the Chinese passengers go to bed about 9-30pm and get up about 5-30am.

A typical chinesse family consists of grandfather x 1 or 2, grandmother x 1 or 2, father, mother and single child and these 5 or 7 people generally move around the ship together. Almost all the Chinese passengers on board speak no English at all.

Best to stay clear of the lifts (elevators) if you can and use the stairs.

I am sure you will have a great and interesting time.

Great help there Docpaul. The same happened on our last cruise.. Couldnt walk in the casino or Windjammer but the rest of the ship was barron. We had great times with some of the bartenders ion the Schooner bar and pool bar just because we were the only ones there most of the time. I am sure this cruise in March will be same same.

Did you try the internet package at all Docpaul? If so, was it worth it?

Cheers

I took the internet package on day 2 or 3 and it cost me about $25 (£15) for 3 or 4 days. Because we were in China for two weeks before the cruise we had a few million photos and we sent a lot home. So yes it was worth it as it faster than most of the hotel internet we had experienced in China. This was for one device (but a staff member give my wife a free internet code for her phone - but keep that under your hat :) ).
