Alaska Aug 12th RC- questions

Recommended Posts

Hello, we are excited to be taking our 2nd cruise on Royal Caribbean in August. It'll be the 5 of us, including kids 16,12,5. A few ?

1. What time do we board? (Can't find on website)

2. What type of clothes? Winter/fall? We live in Oregon and understand packing for this cruise is different than a tropical one.

3. Best shore excursions for families?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Jen

Aim to get to the pier around 11.

Weather is very variable in Alaska. It can be very warm; it can be chilly; it can be rainy; it can be dry. The clothing advice for Alaska is always: layers, layers, layers. And it depends WHERE you are. If you take excursions out onto glaciers or up into mountains, it's different from staying "in town", for example.

Alaska is wonderful. Have a great cruise.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

Your boarding time should be noted on your SetSail (boarding) pass. You should be able to print this now, assuming you have completed online check-in.

Check out the Alaska port of call forum for excursion ideas:

Welcome to Cruise Critic Jen!

I love Alaska. As MerionMom and Clarea have noted, try to be at the by 11 (10:30 is good - gets you through the security and check-in process and they should be close to boarding around 11).

As you know, you pay for Day One --- arriving as early as you can gets you on-board and enjoying the ship sooner.:)

On my last Alaska cruise (Jewel May-June 2015) I was sailing with family -- we booked the independent Yukon Rail and Dogcart tour with Chilkoot Charters and Tours (Skagway). I highly recommend them. It was a lot of fun; we did the bus trip up and the White Pass train back (including a nice BBQ chicken lunch at the Dog-Cart).

Clothes: I was very fortunate on two of the cruises that we had super hot weather and didn't wear any 'heavy' clothes (and thankfully I had two days in Vancouver and two days in Seattle so I had shorts!). One wasn't totally short weather all the time, but was fine in a light jacket and pants. I did wear mitts, long pants, and a jacket on the last cruise (Jewel) when I did walks/laps around the outer deck and up on the heli-pad as it was very windy (cold).

Enjoy your cruise!

Thank you for all your advice. It's definitely different for us than our trip to Mexico Rivera. It's an easy cruise for us since we live in Portland Oregon and can drive to Seattle. We are excited.

Anyone have any feedback from the "children's" programs? In 2010 our then 6 year old daughter did not like the child care.

Anyway! Thanks again for the help! Sincerely appreciate it!

Catherine- was the train/dog cart through the cruise ship or did you venture out on your own?

Jen - it was private, booked directly with Chilkoot Charters. Highly recommend them. The whole group we had was small, so we were able to make a lot of stops on the bus up. They definitely had other groups going and from what I saw they were all small. We had lots of time to spend at the dog-cart and the puppies are so cute (you can touch them, pick them up :). The musher we had was entertaining and we found it very interesting. Price wise - there wasn't a lot of difference, for the more friendly, hands on it was worth it.

That IS confusing!

The thread I was talking about is Radiance, coming out of Vancouver

one way north bound.

Did not realize that EX was also leaving for her round trip out of Seattle

on that day.

Thanks! I am sure we will see you up there. Always seem to run into the Seattle

round trip ship up in one or more of the ports.

You have a fantabulous cruise also! :)
