Taxi from rome airport into rome???

A taxi may cost a few euros less but a good car service will be waiting for you at baggage claim and assist you with your luggage. I always use All Around Italy and when we were dropped off at the airport on our way home our driver went and got luggage carts for us and loaded our luggage. Thank you Fabrizio and Valentino!

I'm curious -- they are waiting for you at baggage claim? I thought that was a secured area. I've only ever seen drivers waiting once you clear Customs and walk through the doors into the central arrivals hall (e.g., the area right in front of the airport doors to outside)...

Also - are the private services still required to be parked away from the terminal? Last time I used a private sedan (I've used the train the last few times), I was met outside the doors of the arrivals hall as you mentioned. BUT, we had to walk to the private vehicle parking lot. Whereas the taxi rank is right there outside the door...

These are both correct. During our October flight to FCO. We were met outside the doors as you exit customs (meeting area to your left) and then escorted to a parking garage near by where the car was parked.

Thanks Tom. I like actual, correct, information. I wanted to verify my experience as what still happens. I wonder what happens when multiple people with multiple big bags are greeted by the driver? I travel light, so I don't know if those luggage carts can go with the people out to the parking garage or they have to drag their bags themselves?

I can't speak to that scenario, however we have used RomeCabs twice at FCO, and both times the driver has taken my wife's huge suitcase (wheeled luggage) on the way to the car.

This gets at why I was asking re: where the private driver met them. I have never seen drivers admitted to the baggage claim area. Once you are in the arrivals hall, it's only steps to the taxi rank (just outside the doors), whereas private drivers have to park farther away.

This is normal procedure in all large airports. Taxi drivers are not allowed in baggage reclaim and normally the taxi rank is closer than picking up a pre ordered car or hire car.

Taxi drivers, yes, have never seen inside the terminal. But, there are cases in the US where private transport drivers will be at baggage claim, holding their signs with the names of the client. They grab your bags and the car is parked sometimes just outside (like SLC) or you have to walk (like JFK). But, I've never seen a private transport driver inside baggage claim in Europe - got to grab your own bags, walk to the meeting place arranged by your transport company, then walk to the private vehicle parking lot. With a taxi, the only difference is that you walk outside the door to the taxi rank and wait your turn. Right?

I suspect everyone is getting confused over where in the process the baggage claim is located. International flights must clear customs after baggage claim. Domestic flights do not. I don't recall ever seeing a private driver in an international flight's baggage claim area.

Are the flights to FCO from within EU considered domestic or international ? I am guessing that they are domestic but please verify.

I will have a flight from WAW to FCO on AlItalia and I believe it lands and proceeds to T1. So where do I look for the private transfer driver. ? The instructions that they sent, suggests "The meeting place".

Part of our 'group' will also fly from WAW to FCO but on a different air line ( Austrian) and they will get their baggage at T3. Is it better for all of us to meet at T1 or T3 ? All of us need to be together before we meet the driver. The group at T3 will be there about 1 hour before 'us' .

I can still request the driver to be at either terminal's meeting place.

Senior moment... Yes, I did get it confused. But, there were some strange moments at SLC where I swear I ended up in the main part of the terminal after a flight in from CDG... But, I had no checked bags, so I can't be sure what happened to others.

  • 4 weeks later...

I read through the thread and saw a number of suggestions for taxis and car services. What about shared shuttle van service from FCO to a Rome hotel? It is just two of us so we won't be forming a group. Does anyone know of regularly scheduled shuttle vans (like SuperShuttle in the US)?

Would we be better off taking the train to Termini and a taxi to our hotel from Termini? We are planning to stay within a mile or two of Termini but will have too much luggage to walk.

Sorry to cause confusion. It does make a difference if you are flying into FCO internationally vs from another EU country. If flying internationally, your driver would meet you after clearing customs. My point was that for a few extra euro €48 vs €55, using a car service, you get a little extra service like help with your luggage, a roundabout overview of some of the top attractions in Rome on the way to your hotel, a stop for wine, etc.

I am not aware of anything like a SuperShuttle. There are a few express bus services that run from FCO to Termini (some may have an intermediate stop): these cost around 4-7 euro per person, depending on which service (and on any specials). The buses have room for your luggage underneath. They are a bit slower than the express train.

The express train to Termini, while fast, is not particularly cheap at 14 euro per person. You also have to take your luggage further than the closer bus depot. For two or more people, it's only about 10 euro more expensive to take a taxi direct from FCO to your hotel than to take the express train + taxi from Termini station.

Just pay the 50e for a private driver

I found out that Civitavechia Cab Company offers a shared van service for 2 people with drop-off at your Rome hotel for 29 euros. We were planning to use them later for a transfer to the port so I was nosing around their web site when I noticed this option. Still may just do a private service to keep it simple.
