Text/communication app on HAL?

HI everyone,

I seem to recall using an on-board smartphone app on MSC which was really convenient for brief communications when we weren't together or had missed meeting each other at some point. It was free and you didn't have to use international calling or cellular time.

 

I can't remember if HAL has something similar, or if ShipMate or some other smartphone app can be used onboard? I definitely don't want to run up a huge bill using cellular/international calling. We can always go old school and leave each other notes, but it would be nice to know if an app were available.

When it comes to onboard communication, HAL seems to be in the stone age (at least it was up until last month). Some cruisers use inexpensive walkee-talkees...although they can certainly be annoying to those around you.

HAL might be old school, but in 10 cruises on HAL (and 10 on other cruise lines), have never felt the need to text anybody,,even when traveling with larger groups. The ships really aren't that big, we know each other's interests and habits, and we communicate the old fashioned way. ...face to face.

We bring along a GoTenna which connects electronically to our iPhones and gives us about a 2 mile range to send messages back and forth. It's a bit problematic to use on the ship because of all of the steel walls.
