sjddavis1 Posted May 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2017 My 10 year old son is dying to go to Mayan ruins but he wants to be able to climb to the top. Is there any in Costa Maya that allow that?
VidaNaPraia Posted May 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2017 Yes. Ek Balam and Coba both have pyramids that tourists can climb. Coba pyramid is rougher (the steps) but has a sturdy rope down the middle. You can rent a bike or take a bicycle taxi pedaled by a guide to get around the site. Much of the site has not been extensively excavated. Ek Balam pyramid is in better condition and part way up there is a terrace extensive sculpture. It is a fairly small site, but beautiful. Coba is probably a slightly shorter trip from the cruise port, but either would perhaps be pushing it time-wise on a short port stop.
sjddavis1 Posted May 16, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted May 16, 2017 I was looking at Chacchoben or Kohunlich. Not familiar with Ek Balam or Coba.
VidaNaPraia Posted May 16, 2017 #4 Share Posted May 16, 2017 I was looking at Chacchoben or Kohunlich. Not familiar with Ek Balam or Coba. You asked about pyramids in the Yucatan where your son would be allowed to climb. There are many Mayan ruins in the Yucatan. You might want to get onto YouTube with him and look at some of the videos of the various ruins to see what each looks like and familiarize yourself with the choices. CarrieAP Posted May 16, 2017 #5 Share Posted May 16, 2017 Chacchoban is reasonable drive from the port and there is a section that can be climbed. A reasonable height so most can do it, but may not necessarily provide the experience he's looking for. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

2InfinityNBeyond Posted June 6, 2017 #8 Share Posted June 6, 2017 We climbed to the top of 3 ruins, and viewed many other ruins, at Dzibanche and Kinichna last week with The Native Choice from Costa Maya. Wow, what a great tour. Only 12 on the tour and we were the only people at either site. Highly recommend.
