Georgina1 Posted July 28, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2017 Hi, Are there any posters out there who have recently (last 3 years) taken Cunard Shore Excursions from the Port of Tianjin to either Beijing (Overnight with accommodation) and/or day trip to The Great Wall and Tombs? We are booked on QM2 (2019) and have an overnight stop in Tianjin (26/27 February) and are looking to take the Cunard Ship excursion. This is our first time visiting Beijing and previously we have done our own thing with DIY Excursions, this time we feel that taking the Ships Excursion might be better for us. We would be interested in any information from posters on both trips; costs, what is included, Itinerary and value for money, plus any other information that people may feel relevant. We are active 73 year olds and are aware of the activity involved. I seem to remember CruiseNH posting on this subject a year or so ago. So any help and information will be appreciated. canoncruiser Posted July 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2017 Hi, I’ve done the Cunard overland to Xian and Beijing-the guides were fabulous, the hotels superb and China is amazing. We flew from Hong Kong and rejoined the ship at Shanghai. In my experience the ship tours have been excellent-others may disagree.
Georgina1 Posted July 28, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted July 28, 2017 Hi canoncruiser, Many thanks for that. Our friends did that overland a few years ago and they thoroughly enjoyed the trip. However we are calling in at Tianjin and overnighting there and we are looking at a Ships excursion from the Port to Beijing/Great Wall, either an overnight stay or a days excursion on the first full day. So we are looking at information/tips on that. Thanks again, Georgina1
cruiser1955 Posted July 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 28, 2017 (edited) I was booked on a Holland America cruise last year. This is an extract from their tour booklet. No doubt the Cunard offering will be along the same lines. Sorry about the spacing but it is a copy and paste. Can't comment on it as I didn't go. Best of Beijing Overnight Tour - Double Departs: 8:45 am 2 days/1 night Price $849 Day 1 (L/D) Travel by motor coach to the youngest of China’s Imperial Cities, and the capital of modern China, Beijing. First, visit the Temple of Heaven—an outstanding example of simple but impressive Imperial architecture, set in a beautiful park that is an oasis in the city. This will be followed by lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, tour the Forbidden City—a vast ‘city within a city’ and a sprawling complex that includes temples and Imperial houses, including a harem built to house the Emperor’s concubines. Then, you will head to famous and infamous Tian’anmen Square, the largest gathering spot in the world. Families flock here in the late afternoon to fly kites and exercise in the enormous open space. Check in at your hotel, and this evening there is an added bonus—you’ll be treated to a feast of traditional Peking duck, right here in modern Peking! Day 2 (B/L) Begin today’s sightseeing adventure with a hearty hotel breakfast; then set out to discover the mysteries of the Ming Tombs in the hills outside Beijing. The most famous of these is the Chang Ling Tomb whose mound has not yet been excavated. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Continue to China’s most spectacular structure and most recognizable landmark—the Great Wall. Running from the sea to the Gobi Desert, this awesome monument to tyranny and separatism is a stark reminder of China’s ruthless Imperial history. Heading along the coast towards Xingang, you’ll rejoin the ship in time for dinner. Notes: Important: It is each guest’s sole responsibility to obtain (before traveling) any visas, vaccinations and/or tourist cards that are required for participating in overland adventures or overnight tours, unless noted otherwise in the description. Please be aware that you may need a visa for any and/or all countries that you will depart from and travel through as part of your overland adventure or overnight tour, and for the country in which you will re-join the ship. ricki Posted July 28, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2017 We had a three day, two night overland Beijing and Great Wall,as part of the WC on Crystal last year. I would imagine Cunard's is similar. We are seasoned travelers, and did go off on our own during free time, but I think doing an organized tour with guides will help you get much more out of the experience. I know it did for us. Beijing is big and crowded, with terrible traffic, so navigating it to visit the notable sights. It was a very worthwhile and not at all what I anticipated. Georgina1 Posted July 28, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted July 28, 2017 Hi Cruiser1955 and Ricki, Thank you both for your information and comments. The overnight excursion looks interesting and maybe there are Cunard posters who have done that excursion with Cunard and can comment. Again many thanks for your help.
