Tipping of the Night/Evening Butlers

Several threads have mentioned that an evening butler usually comes on about 8p or so. Do you typically tip them as they are used, leave a separate envelope at the end (even though you might not see them again), or does your primary butler share tips with them?

Thanks. Just wondering because I have never seen the topic of tipping the evening/night butler covered.

I tip when I use them. I usually only see them once or twice at trip.

I usually make up an excuse (like bringing cookies) for the Butler to come to the cabin the last day, so I can give them their tip. I see the Cabin Steward before dinner the last day and that is when they get their tip. I would never just leave an envelope in the cabin for the Butler or the Cabin Steward, because I would not be sure that they received it. I hand the Concierge their tip, as I'm leaving the ship.

That is what I thought. I did not think that the regular butler would split their tips because they would not know how much the evening/night butler was even used.

Thanks. Just wanted to confirm what the norm/others did.

Thanks for posting this question. Hadn't thought of this. Didn't use the evening butler on our Haven cruise, but thinking we will on our next trip. Honestly, on the BA, the haven restaurant was so convenient, we never had a meal delivered, including breakfast. After spending time on CC reading about "butler requests" and my mom being older - I anticipate her having a late night snack in the cabin rather than walking to O'Sheehans.

I have to laugh a bit at this because my first Haven cruise I had taken my mother and there were a couple of nights when she wanted something to eat but didn't want me to order room service for her because she felt bad about waking the butler up and she didn't want anything being served at the places that were open. I felt the same way too, didn't want to "wake up" the butler, but would have done it for mom. I KNOW we spent the money on the room for this kind of service.......but still. Then on this board I found out about the evening butler :) .......My last cruise I did use his service twice but I did make sure I tipped him on each visit.....just to make sure in my head that he got a tip for his awesome service......and he was pretty awesome and accommodating.

I have assumed the night butlers do get a share. Our butler told me they rotate every cruise so 2 day butlers will become night on the next cruise and the rest shift to a new set of cabins. There were only the two at night. So if they got a portion of each day butler's tips it would average out.

What would you tip the night butler for each visit?

I believe the first late night we had a couple of sandwiches and drinks and it was $6...the second time we had a friend stop by and we had a "movie" night and ordered pizza , wings and some other snack I forget what.....and a few drinks. We had UBP but we were in jammies and after a bit nobody wanted to do the bar run. We tipped $10 that night. No rhyme or reason to the tipping so can't say it was appropriate or not but he seemed very friendly, accommodating and a bit surprised when we tipped even though we explained we wanted to make sure he got something. I have to add that while it seems so dumb and boring to have movie night in the cabin on a cruise when there are so many fun activities around us. We didn't plan to stay in the cabin, we gave our friend a tour of our haven suite..sat down and waited for one friend to get ready to go to the casino, while we waited started watching a movie ...got hooked....changed back to jammies and had the best evening with friends and lots of laughs.

from what i understand, they all rotate and each butler works one overnight. i dont think you need to tip that butler separately as in theory in all comes out in the wash at the end. your butler serves others on their overnight, and someone else's butler serves you on their overnight.

We will be on a 15 day cruise in NOV. I'm sure we are going to do movie and snacks a few times. You said the night butler brought you drinks. If you have the UBP will they bring you alcohol? Also wondering will they bring you a soda with your meal or is this something I'd have to run to the bar to get? Last time we were on a ncl cruise was may 2015 and so many things have changed since then. Although we've had a few suites over the years, we've never really used the butler for much, except to fill coffee, water and the usual daily snacks.
