Currency exchange on board

Folks

We're cruising the Med in July. We've got euros (in cash) already, but we're obviously going to need some US dollars for use on board. Can we change euros to dollars on board? And before anyone suggests using the ship's ATM, I've read on other posts that it's often empty!

Thanks

Vivienne

We sailed the Med on the Golden over a year ago. Used their ATM's and had no problem -- if it's empty, let the purser know and they can refill the machine. You will be hard pressed to do some currency exchange in port. There is so little time and time will be wasted looking for a place to exchange. You did the right thing by purchasing Euros ahead of time to use for small purchases, but plan on using your credit card in ports. Card companies charge your account with the rate of exchange on the day they post the charge.

Yes you can exchange at pursers desk, at a more or less favorable rate. You can also use your credit card and get the very best rate you bank makes available.

On our Star Princess cruise last year, we visited several different countries from the U.S. to New Zealand to Australia. They had machines installed that would exchange your money, not ATM's but actual money exchange machines. First time I had ever seen these on a ship. Made it very easy to convert to whatever country we were about to visit and then convert back after we left. Of coarse they only take bills, not change, but it was great to be able exchange at any time of the day or night.
