smm0218 Posted September 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2017 Decided it was time to work on next port stop. I only have 8 months, after all. :D Interested in any great excursions / sights in the area. About 10 hours TOTAL port time. Any suggestions / recommendations? TIA
Nanner Posted September 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2017 You could go to Blarney Castle. We didn't kiss the stone, we just spent a great day enjoying the grounds. Beautiful, numerous gardens. We really didn't hang out in Cork proper. Limerick is a very nice town about a 2 hour drive away, with King John's Castle and other things to explore. There is a train to Limerick from Cork, too.
Rare geoherb Posted October 1, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2017 We booked a coach eCoach (aka Butlers) that went to Blarney Castle and Kinsale last month. Our ship was delayed in getting to Cobh, and the company emailed us to let us know that they knew and would adjust the times. Fortunately, the ship was able to stay later to make up for getting there late. We ended up with around the same amount of time, just a late morning arrival instead of an early morning one. We had a great coach driver--a native of Cobh. We were fortunate not to have too long a wait to kiss the Blarney Stone, around 45 minutes. We ran into friends from a previous cruise and used the time to catch up with them and still had time to see the Rock Close and a bit of the rest of the grounds. It would have been nice to have had longer. We did not go to the Woollen Mills. Kinsale was quaint. We had fish and chips and then ice cream (honeycomb flavor--but the candy, not real honeycomb. Here's a recipe: http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Yellow-Man). The drive through the countryside was just how I imagined Ireland would look. We also drove through Cobh and Cork but did not have a chance to get off the bus. If our ship had been on its original schedule, we would have had time to walk around Cobh some after the tour. smm0218 Posted October 1, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted October 1, 2017 Honeycomb appears to be Peanut Brittle without the peanuts. Do you remember about how much time you had in Kinsale? I'm thinking that the drive to Kinsale would be a good way to see the "green" of Ireland.
ChattTenn Posted October 1, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 1, 2017 We booked a coach eCoach (aka Butlers) that went to Blarney Castle and Kinsale last month. Hi. Understood you booked with eCoach. Did you book on line and how far advance did you book the tour?. Did you go on coach or private group?. We read through some posts about them and probably will use them for our stop in Cork/Cobh. Our cruise won't be until Spring of next year. Did you see Pattywagon coach while you were in this port?. Did you know any people from your sailing had used them?. The cost for both is the same for coach. Thank you
Cindy Posted October 15, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 15, 2017 I've contracted with Butler's for a tour to Kinsale. I have found them very easy to work with and eager to help. Sent from my iPad using Forums
smm0218 Posted October 15, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Cindy I think you are on a different ship than we are. We are Royal Princess leaving June 6th. If you don't mind sharing, Did you book a private tour or join with others and about how much is their tour? Thanks Sandi

We booked a private tour for four of us, but we will post the tour on the roll call and hope to find others to join us. The price for a full day for a van that will seat 6 to 12 people is £390. They required a £50 deposit, and the rest is payable on the day of the tour. We have a tentative itinerary, but will finalize it when the cruise gets closer. smm0218 Posted October 15, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Same ship, different sailing. It's nice that they will let you customize the tour. Thanks for the info
