Wondering if anyone knows if you can self disembark on the Star in Venice? If yes, what time do they start? We are trying to figure out what time to book a train from the Mestre Train Station. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks !!

I did this last July. The ship was delayed, over an hour. I was going to the airport and made it there, easily using the public bus transit. If there's no urgency, then I'd be conservative with your train departure time. How were you planning on getting to the station? Impacts timing as well.

Hmmmmm. No Self Disembark!! Interesting. So the ship is supposed to dock at 8 a. We plan to have a private taxi waiting for us. Guess we would be safe booking the 11:30a train ?? I think it’s a 30 minute taxi ride.

That’s our plan too. I’ve booked a taxi and our train leaves Mestre at 11:02. Fog “shouldn’t” be an issue in June so we’ll keep fingers crossed!

What time do you plan to have taxi meet the ship?? I wonder how long it takes to disembark?

Thanks everyone for your quick responses.

No, self disembark isn’t allowed in Venice.

It is a port rule.

Of course rules can change, but that has been the case for many years.

And yet....I've done it, personally.

They don't announce it, but we were in a suite and the just escorted us to gangway with our stuff. Nobody bothered to ask whether we had 'other' stuff in the terminal.

I’m debating with myself (not sure who will win!) but I think probably 9:30. We’ll end up with some time at the station camping out which I don’t love to do with all the luggage but oh well. I figure avoiding the people mover line and dragging bags over the bridge (and the associated teenage whining) makes it worth the small extra cost. We’re using Zip Transfers there as well as the next day in Milan to go from hotel to airport.

Well, of course, if you don't put your bags out then they aren't going to not let you off the ship as a punishment.

Anyone who really wants to self walk off can just keep hold of their bags, and undoubtedly they will be able to do so. When everyone is doing it then the queues to get into the lifts will become nice and long for everyone, which I'm pretty sure is the reason for the rule.

That doesn't alter the fact that it officially isn't allowed.

If the port rules are no self carryoff, then no self carryoff.

Thanks for the lecture.

It would perhaps have been better directed at those who have stated that they have done self disembarkation anyway, rather than me who always leaves my bags out at Venice, but whatever.

So my next question is how long will it take to disembark? Is there Immigration and Customs? How do I get an earlier color tag for my luggage that we will put outside our cabin the night before??

Thanks!

Of course there is an official clearance. In my case, in July, the ship was held for over an hour, past the stated start time. I did self debark along with many others. I simply walked to the people walker, taking it one stop then getting an airport bus. Even more delays there. with security/immigration.
