They now  know what time we enter our cabin and  by which key card  the door was   opened.  They don't need  to know if  I chose to spend a long  time soaking in my tub reading a magazine or two...........

With the key card they knew when someone entered the cabin, but not who entered with that person. With the Medallion, they will know all who entered who had a Medallion with them.

And unless you have your Medallion with you in the bathroom while in the tub, they will not know you are in there or for how long.

If you want to have some fun with their system, have spouses trade Medallions and go to their respective public rest rooms.

There are more questions then answers.  For example, say that both partners (in a cabin) have drink packages.  One person decides to go out to a bar and bring back two drinks to enjoy in the cabin.  So they take both Medallions (required to get the two drinks) while their partner is still in the cabin.  Will the cabin lights automatically turn off since they are activated only when a Medallion is in the cabin?  And when a bar tender goes to charge for their drink, will their scan device be able to handle two medaillions on the same person?

Actually, there are Medallion features for which you do need your own Smart Phone.  As a simple example, the cruise line can "push" custom advertising to your phone (or cabin screen).  You need your phone for internal messaging options.  And you can even use your phone for gambling...for those who are in need of a pocket gambling device.  On our recent Regal cruise we were also given unlimited Internet that was pretty high speed (for a ship).  For the first time in our 45+ years of cruising we actually felt the desire to have at least one phone (either DW or me) since we were receiving text phone calls, face time, etc. just like at home.  And we got all this for free because of a special perk given to "Elites" and Platinums on our cruise.  As a football fan it was nice to be able to check scores at any time.

Regarding Sail7Seas comment about smart phones that did make me laugh and read the message to DW  Up until about 18 months ago DW carried an old flip phone.  One day, while she was at lunch with a g/f she pulled out her flip phone to answer a call.  Her friend later told her to never do that again since having a flip phone or being with somebody with a flig phone is embarassing :).  Shortly after that lunch we had a grandchild.  Suddenly DW wanted her own Smartphone so she could "facetime" with the new baby several times a day :).  It is because of "Facetime" that DW is now hooked on her phone.

My flip phone is only    turned on if I  MUST make a call, such as  to  AAA.      I have given the number to absolutely no one.  Thus, I never get phone calls on it.   Horror of horrors, I still have a land line.

I do not use the fool thing but for an urgent needs.

I don't have a  need or particular use  for anything more than  that.    Imagine someon e being t heir own person and not  following the herd.

You are certainly correct. You do need the cell phone or other digital device to gamble outside of the casino. And although you do need your cell phone for the advertising, I do not consider that a benefit. I consider it a reason not to use a cell phone.

The internal message capability existed before the Medallion upgrades. And, yes, you always needed a cell phone for that.

Oh.Gee. I'll just have to suffer  by 'not' receiving

pushed advetisements during a cruise.  😄
