Spanky My Posted September 26, 2019 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2019 What would folks recommend for Mosquito repellent as we will be taking a couple of jungle type tours in Costa Rica ? Anyone been in this area in the end of November and were bugs/mosquitos a real issue?
BillB48 Posted September 26, 2019 #2 Share Posted September 26, 2019 Any repellent that has DEET in it, like Off etc. The higher the percentage the longer it will last without reapplication. Been to the Pacific side of Costa Rica in the Puntarenas area several times in November and don't recall any problems with mosquitoes at all. Portions of the tours were in forested areas, encountered a few flies at a fruit stand but nothing more. If you happen to be inquiring about the area around Limon which is on the Atlantic coast, I was there in February and March and had a similar experience as on the Pacific coast. Since that time of year is their Dry Season, so it may not be an accurate comparison. Didn't use any repellent.
Spanky My Posted September 26, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted September 26, 2019 Thanks BillB48...Mainly concerned on the Pacific side of Costa rica as our cruise has 6 days there. We have booked 3 guides to take us into the parks and jungles to view wild life. Appreciate your response.
Rare Turtles06 Posted September 27, 2019 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2019 Picaridin is an alternative to DEET. (I find it less sticky than DEET-containing products.) Here's a helpful piece from the CDC about mosquito repellents: https://www.cdc.gov/zika/prevention/prevent-mosquito-bites.html Whatever you use, the important thing is that it be a recognized repellent, and that the product contain a sufficient concentration of it.
