larry.wiley4405 Posted January 20, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2020 Our cruise docks in Naples on May 1st. My understanding is that the ruins are closed that day for a Italy holiday. Are there other places available to visit that are NOT effected by the holiday?
euro cruiser Posted January 21, 2020 #2 Share Posted January 21, 2020 May 1st, Labor Day, is celebrated in every country of Europe (as well as parts of Asia and Africa), so that day is difficult wherever you happen to stop on a Med cruise. Pretty much every public institution will be closed as it's a day to celebrate workers. You could still take a ferry over to Capri, or to Ischia or Procida. You could hire a car service to do an Amalfi Coast tour but I would expect that these will sell out and be priced higher on such a day. I would also expect the traffic along the coast road to be especially bad on that day.
kochleffel Posted February 1, 2020 #3 Share Posted February 1, 2020 When I was there in 2018, the Pompeii ruins were open on May 1, but we did not know until that day that they would be.
euro cruiser Posted February 1, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 1, 2020 It does happen but it won't be announced until shortly before. For example, in 2016 the opening for May 1 was announced on April 26: https://www.ilmattino.it/napoli/cronaca/il_direttore_generale_della_soprintendenza_massimo_osanna_rinforza_la_vigilanza-1694752.html In 2015 it was announced on April 23: http://www.napolitoday.it/cronaca/apertiura-scavi-pompei-ercolano-oplontis-1-maggio-2015.html
