To be honest we were lulled into a false sense of security seeming to have beaten covid so people didn't bother being vaccinated. That's come back to bite us back. I think it is a mistake to call Covid the same as the flu. It has a much higher infection rate and a greater proportion who catch it get seriously ill. I do agree that vaccination is the first weapon in the strategy to control the pandemic though.
