Keeping that in mind, if a person cannot or will not subject themselves to a scanner they can insist on a more personal "pat down." This can be a bit of a hassle, not only at airports and ports, but whenever you a ship at a port. Most cruise ships scan everyone (even crew) with a metal detector everything they board the ship.
