Falkland Islands - bus?

Hello

 

Have heard about a bus that you can get at the dock to Bertha's Beach to see penguins.  Has anyone done this?  Details on time, etc.?

Have you tried contacting Falkland Islands Tourist Board. We recently returned from a cruise which stopped in Falkland Islands and we found their Tourist Information Centre staff were very knowledgeable. Besides their website, I believe they also have a Facebook page.

THanks, I found some info a from a few years ago - that there is a shuttle available at the visitor center.  Hopefully that is still true.  Will update the post when we return.

We read about these shuttles too and emailed the tourist office, they replied that the shuttle buses go to Gypsy Cove, about 3 miles from Stanley where there are Gentoo penguins, but the buses are provided by the cruise line not the tourist office, and some cruises do not offer them.  They said it's an easy walk across the causeway if you are used to walking.  The Falklands "penguin lady" posted that Gypsy Cove has a small penguin colony year round with chicks from Nov to end of Feb.

Yes, can confirm there are buses.  $20.  Not an easy walk - quite a long way.  Some folks saw king penguins to the right of where the bus stops - they walked a fair way along the beach to see them though.  FYI there is washrooms at Gypsy Cove.  Better to go early in the day as the adults go out for food.  We saw some chicks and a few adults.

Hey Smee thx for the update.  I'm assuming it was $20 return, not each way.

I think so, we were on a tour.  Did not end up having to take the bus.

was just in Stanley yesterday - February 1, 2023

 

The shuttles were right in front of the tourist information.  There is a guy with a sign and he sells the tickets for $20 US cash only and gives you a paper ticket.  Then you take the one of many buses that go back and forth all day long.  

 

It is transportation only.

 

It is only about a 10 min drive away.  

 

you can walk along the path thru the low brush to see a lot of Magellanic penguins.  You have to look though as the adults and babies can sometimes be hidden by the  grasses.  Note the path is uneven at times.  There are a few benches along it too if you need to sit.  

 

Beautiful views too.

 

Yes if you walk to the right along the beach, you may come across some other penguins, we saw gentoos and a few King.  It is a long walk and tough to walk on the sand.  There were numerous people who were really struggling when they chose to do that route.  

 

There are washrooms there too.  Also numerous volunteers there too that aided visitors with information but mainly given warnings to stay a distance from the penguins, especially the nesting ones.  

 

we also saw a lot of dolphins in the bay too.
