According to the latest Internet rumors, here's who will be on the Ultimate Disco Cruise in 2025 (if it goes):

  • Raniere Martin (Donna Summer tribute probably)
  • Rose Royce
  • Tavares
  • Boogie Wonder Band (we knew this from previous rumors)
  • Trammps with Earl Young (knew this also)
  • Bee Gees Gold
  • Stone City Band
  • a Rick James tribute band
  • Denny Terrio as host

Most of these have been on the UDC before (the ones who have not I put in italics above).  Tavares was scheduled to be on this year's UDC but dropped out.  My reaction is this is a good back half of the lineup, but I'm hoping for bigger names to eventually commit.

UPDATE:  The UDC 2025 has posted what they have for their lineup so far, and mostly it matches what I said above.  Score one for Internet rumors!

Another small update for the UDC - I got an e-mail from them saying that prices are going to increase on October19.  This is a subtle sign that this cruise is actually going to go; I don't think they'd want to increase prices if they were struggling for reservations.

Because I have a little extra time on my hands, I'll do a review of the Billboard Hot 100 for November 24, 1984 similar to what I did last week for a random week in 1985.

From the bottom to the top...

At #88 was @George C approved crooner Melissa Manchester with "Thief of Hearts".  She was scheduled to be on next year's Rock & Romance cruise, but bailed out.  Too bad.  ☹️  Maybe she would have played this one?  I honestly don't remember it from back in the day.

At #83 was "Foolish Heart" from Steve Perry.  He also had a song at #96 ("Strung Out").  The latter I liked better and indeed count it as my favorite Steve/Journey song.  DSB did one of Steve's solo hits during their show on the Ruby in April, but it was neither of these.

DSB-singer.jpg.1e9e805c6bb7e15ec6a9780360dae1a0.jpg

At #81 was Kool and the Gang with "Misled".  I saw the Gang on the UDC in both 2022 and 2023.  They didn't play this song either time.  This shot is from last year's concert:

IMG_20220226_192025.thumb.jpg.352c5b6657aa218a9153a13f994d90cd.jpg

At #75 was Donna Summer with "Supernatural Love".  I don't remember this one either.  Will Rainere Martin, our Donna Summer tribute act, cover this one on the 2025 UDC?  Somehow I doubt it, but I hope to see for myself.

At #72 was Prince and the Revolution with "Let's Go Crazy".  At #2 was Prince and the Revolution with "Purple Rain".  Tribute band Red Corvette played both of these on the Ruby.

IMG_20230413_193705.thumb.jpg.46c51c30075334a502c939fb3e7c670a.jpg

At #65 was the band Prince had his fingers all over - The Time - with "Jungle Love".  Morris Day and The Time played this on The 80s Cruise earlier this year.

IMG_20230305_195651.thumb.jpg.56d9cb5df29971fb59086450c90b373a.jpg

At #57 was "Tender Years" and at #31 was "On the Dark Side", both by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.  They played both of these on The 80s Cruise last year:

IMG_20220309_193427.thumb.jpg.03cc96707b2fcd70da8f03ebae74c208.jpg

At #51 was "Body" from The Jacksons.  I saw them on the UDC in 2022.  No, this one didn't make the cut.

IMG_20220301_193646.thumb.jpg.f53d761f87ef9cf1f0eee18dd90d8b3a.jpg

At #50 was "Jamie" from Ray Parker, Jr.  I'm looking forward to seeing him on next year's edition of The 80s Cruise.  Will he play this one?  I think it's close to 50-50.  We'll see.

At #47 was "You're the Inspiration" and at #20 was "Hard Habit to Break", both from Chicago.  The story here gets a little complicated.  Jason Scheff was the lead singer and bassist for Chicago, but not on these songs (he joined just after this album as released).  He'll be leading a superband/tribute group called Generation Radio on next year's Rock and Romance Cruise.  Who knows how much of the old Chicago hits he'll play, but Mr. Scheff has played them in the past (source:  https://generationradio.com/generation-radio/ ).  My view is that more Chicago = better.  I'll probably find time for these guys next year, but the concert calendar is already packed, so there's a chance I might not.

Moving along, at #42 was "Girls With Guns" from Tommy Shaw.  I have this LP somewhere in cold storage.  I liked it.  Mr. Shaw eventually went back to his day job with some obscure band called Styx.  I saw them in concert last month.  This song didn't make the cut.

20230901_203432.thumb.jpg.c911011e00cbcfe3f6c8379de9da78d2.jpg

At #25 was "Teacher Teacher" from 38 Special.  They're featured on next year's edition of The 80s Cruise.  I'm hoping against hope that they play this 🙏, but I think it's too obscure.

Coming at #19 was Pat Benatar with "We Belong".  I saw her a few weeks ago and yes, she played it:

20230819_204910.thumb.jpg.307f9d36f6ecf9e99b783aef56d6ec3a.jpg

At #16 was David Bowie with "Blue Jean".  The upcoming Rock & Romance Cruise will have a tribute to Mr. Bowie called "Being With(out) David Bowie".  Will this one make the cut?  More likely no than yes, but anything is possible.

At #15 was Dennis DeYoung with "Desert Moon".  Mr. DeYoung was with Styx for a long time, but he isn't anymore.  Here's the guy that replaced him in Styx.  He did a good job. They didn't play any of Mr. DeYoung's solo stuff, obviously:

Dennis-DeWannabe.jpg.05acbe68b758b513f4eee746f557e88e.jpg

At #7 was Sheena Easton with "Strut".  I'm really, really looking forward to seeing Ms. Easton on The 80s Cruise.  😍  This isn't my favorite song from her, but it's up there, and I think she's likely to play it.

Finally, at #4 was Daryl Hall and John Oates with "Out Of Touch".  We had a tribute band called Rich Girl play this one on the Regal Princess a couple of years ago.  I apologize in advance for the photo quality:

IMG_20211129_212027.thumb.jpg.9df323b601cea4e0c5615ec723ca4cbb.jpg

Thank you for joining me on this journey into the past and into the future.  I promise my next post will be a lot shorter and have more news content.

The latest Internet rumor is that George McCrae will be on the 2025 edition of the UDC, if it sails (which it looks increasingly likely to).  He was on last year's edition; I didn't see him there.  But he made a surprise appearance with KC and the Sunshine Band on this year's cruise.  We weren't on the ship for this concert; we were actually in Key West.  He got a nice reception from the crowd when he sang his big hit "Rock Your Baby", which was written by KC.

Here I go again with a review of a random American Top 40 countdown - this time from July 9, 1977.

The relevant songs start with #29.  KC and the Sunshine Band held that position with "I'm Your Boogie Man".  He played it on the UDC both last year and this year.

IMG_20230226_134727(1).thumb.jpg.47916acef63621662bed0bf5ef751414.jpg

Moving on to #23 was "Feels Like the First Time" by Foreigner.  Lou Gramm played this on The 80s Cruise earlier this year.  I expect Foreigner to play it on the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise next March.

IMG_20230309_185824.thumb.jpg.779c74425e977586a20839441989d473.jpg

Ranking at #21 was "Life In the Fast Lane" from The Eagles.  Hotel California, Eagles' tribute band, will be covering their hits on Rock & Romance next year.  Will they play this one?  It's from the LP Hotel California, so there's a decent shot.

At #16 was "Whatcha Gonna Do?" by Pablo Cruise.  They'll also be doing the R&R thing next year.  This was their first hit, so it's extra likely to be played.

#13 was held by "Dreams" from Fleetwood Mac.  We have Bella Donna doing a tribute to Fleetwood Mac on R&R.  I'm pretty sure they'll get to this one.

For the benefit of @George C, I'll list #9 - "Margaritaville" from Jimmy Buffett.  Mr. Buffett recently died, but this song will live on for a very long time on the radio, in homes, on cruise ships, and even portside tourist traps like this one:

IMG_20230228_100957.thumb.jpg.75ccafaaa70345f104e6590174558fc8.jpg

The last song of relevance to us was at #5.  This was held by Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything".  I don't know much about Bee Gees Gold, but they'll be on the Rock & Romance Cruise, and they do say they play Andy Gibb songs, so maybe they'll get to this one?

Thanks again for stopping by.

All right, I'll do just one of these this week, and then I'm gonna stop.  This random AT 40 countdown is from October 18, 2023.

#40 was "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" from Pat Benatar.  As I mentioned earlier, Ms. Benatar doesn't play this song live anymore.  This is her singing one of her other songs at her show a couple of months ago:

20230819_201620(1).thumb.jpg.e3d4ca5be4fec4806ddd71c3bbf51598.jpg

Moving along, #37 was "Walk Away" from Donna Summer.  She also had the #11 song that week, "The Wanderer".  I liked the former much more than the latter, even though the latter was much more successful for her.  I say the odds are against Rainere Martin performing either of these on the UDC '25.

The Jacksons had the week's hot mover with "Lovely One" at #28.  The Jacksons were at last year's edition of the UDC and they played this one.

IMG_20220301_194628.thumb.jpg.a1d35ef8e595aaa8e8fd553560b9998b.jpg

At #27 was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" from Daryl Hall and John Oates.  Rich Girl was on the Regal Princess on an 80s themed cruise back in December 2021.  They performed several Hall & Oates songs, but not this one.

IMG_20211129_212027.thumb.jpg.4f82b8898e4e21f36675dce9cbed3026.jpg

The last of back-to-back-to-back songs was "Whip It" from Devo at #26.  They were on The 80s Cruise earlier this year, but I decided not to go see them.

Diana Ross had two songs in this countdown - "I'm Coming Out" at #18 and "Upside Down" at #3.  The ex-Chic ladies performed the latter at the 2022 edition of the UDC.  Not a surprise if you remember how much it sounded like a Chic song at the time (which wasn't a bad thing at all):

IMG_20220227_165534.thumb.jpg.a62c0ae31e316bed6fbb37023f79ea32.jpg

#6 was "Real Love" from the Dobbie Brothers.  The story here gets interesting.  We have the Doobie Others on the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise that might perform this, and we also have Michael McDonald, who sung lead and might also perform it on his special cruise.  It'll be interesting to see if I get two performances of it within a month of each other.

#4 was "All Out of Love" by Air Supply.  They will be on The 80s Cruise in a few months, and I'm calling it now - this one is a lock to be played.

And finally, at #1 for a third consecutive week was Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust".  Queen Nation closed their show on the UDC this year with it, and I'm sure they'll perform it on the Rock & Romance Cruise.

Three items of note.  I'll try to be quick about them.  No photos this time.  ☹️

1.  In the Always Something There to Remind Me department, on the drive into work today I heard Soft Cell's "Tainted Love".  They'll be on next year's 80s Cruise.  There is (almost) no chance that I will go see them.

Then they played a promo for a Great White / Quiet Riot concert at one of the state's megacasinos on December 29.  Great White was on last year's edition of The 80s Cruise.  I didn't go see them.  Quiet Riot has done cruise ship concerts here and there through the years, though they're not scheduled for any that I'm on.

2.   There are only 3 days until the Stephen Pearcy / Quiet Riot concert.  I have the Ticketmaster app; my ticket pops up nicely.  They don't accept printouts or have any printed tickets.  I've been thinking about what shirt to wear.  I don't have any Pearcy, Ratt, or QR logowear, so I'm going to have to dig deeper in my closet for something appropriate.  How about one of those 80s Cruise T-shirts?  Mr. Pearcy will be on next year's TEC.  Or maybe I'll bring my aloha shirt of many bands?  We'll see.  I'll come up with something.

3.  Speaking of that concert, the weather looks... manageable on the way there.  The concert location is about 150 miles away from home, about a 2 1/2 hour drive.  I don't like driving in the rain, so I want to avoid that.  Anyway, the latest weather forecasts for both here and there show rain chances Friday through Saturday, but the rain is likely to pass by Saturday afternoon.  Sunday should be clear.  I might have to dodge some raindrops on the way there, but it shouldn't be too bad.  Not bad enough to cancel anyway.

I got an e-mail with three items from the UDC.  First, it reminded us that prices will be going up tomorrow morning.  No worries for me; my price is locked in and I'll be making monthly payments until the end of time. 🙂  Those of you out there that are reading this and are interested, well, you know what to do.  🤑

Second, there's a clarification that the Original Stone City Band is The Rick James Band.  That's good; I like Rick's music and I'll probably check these guys out.

Third, the UDC did add a few acts to the list - George McCrae (whom we already knew - thank you random Internet rumors!), The Legendary Blue Notes, and The Brothers Johnson.  The Blue Notes were on the last UDC earlier this year.  I didn't go to their concerts and probably will pass on them again.  The Brothers have a couple of songs I really like - "Stomp!" and "I'll Be Good to You".  They have a couple of other hits that I need to explore.  I look forward to seeing them.

I recently returned from a trip to the southwest tip of the state for a concert that featured Stephen Pearcy (RATT's lead singer) and Quiet Riot.  TL,DR:  Both concerts were good, filled with great songs (IMHO).

I had never been to the Four Winds Casino before.  It was fairly easy to get to - though the showers and construction along the way were trying.  The path from the interstate to the casino was relatively long and twisty, but eventually I ended up where I needed to go.  There seemed to be lots of surface parking, even near the main casino entrance, so I passed on the parking garage.

Checking in was easy enough, as was getting to my hotel room.  Since the trip from home was 2 1/2 hours each way, I determined early on that I needed an overnight stay somewhere along the way, and what more convenient place could there be than where the casino where the concert was taking place?  There were few other hotel options nearby, so I was kind of stuck with it.

The hotel room was nice enough with an excellent view of nature just beyond the casino grounds as its highlight, but this was the most expensive hotel room I've ever paid for out of my pocket - $322 for the night.  Ouch!

20231022_075403.thumb.jpg.35e6a941e6ba8f5d6bd1258197bd281a.jpg

After joining the local slot club, I tested the fates at a couple of the pretty slot machines.  I ended up with an enormous profit of $3.  This was my biggest win; yes, I'm the last of the big time spenders. 🤑

20231021_194132.thumb.jpg.62c35752a5765a3a3078291f788ba155.jpg

Finally, it was time to get seated for the big shows!  Quiet Riot was first.  They closed the show with my favorite song from them, "Bang Your Head".  Their big hit, "Cum On Feel the Noise", was immediately before this.  They played 10 other songs before those, all of which I recognized.  The biggest and best surprise among the songs they played was one from their first album - the "Metal Health" closer "Thunderbird", which they dedicated to those that departed from the band for whatever reason.

20231021_211209.thumb.jpg.3d530bb704494f92765d4ceec5694fc5.jpg

20231021_215704.thumb.jpg.12bd06319430f17fa1a2d9041a3e1c7e.jpg

After about 15 minutes of an intermission (surprisingly quick, I thought - I expected at least a half hour), it was time for Mr. Stephen Pearcy.

20231021_220032.thumb.jpg.ca13d9728bb60626c979fea37b557f91.jpg

Mr. Peacy, as I mentioned earlier, is the lead singer for hard rock/metal band RATT that had its heyday in the early and mid 1980s.  This is when I latched onto them.  I won't bore you with the story of why the whole gang isn't touring together (partly because I don't know it all).  I thought Stephen did a good job with what he had - some great songs (again, IMHO) and capable performances by the rest of the band.

20231021_221651.thumb.jpg.ce712ac991232a1e2e3c67c016e03afd.jpg

Mr. Pearcy did 13 songs, all from RATT - none of his later solo stuff made the cut.  The big hit "Round and Round" closed out the show.  My favorite RATT song, "Dangerous But Worth the Risk", wasn't played.  My favorite song among those they did play was "Lay It Down", which is #3 on my personal list.  The most obscure song they played was definitely "The Morning After', which was a filler song from the middle of the B-side of "Out of the Cellar", their first and biggest album.

20231021_222734.thumb.jpg.57425e270958a5ef16b71b2d54045dfa.jpg

20231021_230441.thumb.jpg.c0afcd3ff927fd9f1618dd27fe8920b6.jpg

After the show was the meet and greet that I bought and paid for.  Me and about 30 others gathered in a corner to get the opportunity to meet Mr. Pearcy when he was ready to meet us.  It didn't take all that long; maybe half an hour until we were swept to a side room to meet him.  He greeted us individually to sign our stuff and make small talk.  I was fifth in line.  The show gave us an 8 X10 glossy for him to sign, we could take a photo with him with our camera or cell phone, and we each had an opportunity to have up to three personal items autographed by him.  The items I chose were the outer cover of RATT's first greatest hits collection and the outer cover of (IMHO) RATT's best album, "Invasion of Your Privacy".  Mr. Pearcy talked about my name (it's an uncommon one) and my shirt (I chose the shirt with many band logos and got many compliments on it elsewhere), so I didn't get a chance to talk to him about The 80s Cruise and how I'm so looking forward to seeing him there.

Since these items were so highly personalized, I won't be putting them out for the wide Internet to consume.  I'll show them to @George C when we meet.  I realize that Stephen can't compare to Melissa Manchester, but we each have out idols, and I'm glad I got to meet him for the few minutes that I did.  He seemed nice enough from the brief contact I had with him and witnessed him with others.  One thing I never realized before is that he's relatively small in stature.

20231021_231608.thumb.jpg.d85e4dd87be7bad8e7c9c337febb105a.jpg

I'll end the story of this musical adventure here.  Scheduling concerts a long distance away is very chancy here during the late fall and winter months, so my next adventure looks to be The 80s Cruise at the end of February, where I'll see, among other things, an encore by Mr. Pearcy.  Will he play the same songs?  Probably not, but that's a story for another day.

Thanks for sticking around.

We haven’t been to a casino in a few years even though we are only a hour from the biggest casino in the world , it’s about a mile walk from one end to the other , we always stay and only go when we want to see the concert , saw Dylan and many others, Ringo I think was there this weekend. Hotel cost is about 300 .

Thank you for the notes.  I used to be more of a gambler when I was younger, but these days I mostly get my thrills in other ways.

While I'm here, I'll talk about a couple of items I found on the Web site for one of Michigan's megacasinos.

First was something called an "80's Rewind New Year's Eve Party" on New Year's Eve (duh).  They've got a band (Your Generation In Concert, know nothing about them, Web site looks all right), they've got a couple of free drink tickets with purchase of entry tickets ($75 for one, $140 for two), they've got food, and they've got a complimentary champagne toast to ring in the new year.  This isn't my thing, but it's nice to know that there are other celebrations of the best decade ever.  😁

The other item was a concert by Chicago.  There's a very long lead time here - the concert isn't until May 25, 2024.  There are three levels of VIP access that mostly differ in the ticket location and the type of swag given out.  The regular ticket prices are $63 to $97.  VIP package #3, which offers the least, ranges from $230 to $237.  VIP package #2 is $347.  And VIP package #1, with its offer of FRONT ROW SEATS!  is $472.  I like Chicago, but I'm not sure if I like them that much.  This one might also involve an overnight stay, though not necessarily at this megacasino.  I'll put this in the "consider" pile and promise to let you know if I do something with this.

I'd like to say a few things about the Big Easy Cruise, which is sailing off on November 4:

  • Booking have been closed.  I rather doubt that they sold the ship out before they did this.
  • The performance schedule is up.  It's always interesting looking at these, even though I don't know who any of these acts are
  • Believe it or not, this cruise and the Rock & Romance cruise next year share a performer - The Newbees
  • The site hasn't flipped over to the 2024 edition, which IMHO means there probably won't be a 2024 edition

Wonder how many members of Chicago are original, last year of rock and romance the original drummer was there and they had one of there lead singers on rock and romance for years , same as many groups on rock and romance that only have maybe one original member, but all are normally great . Love getting front seat seats, we had was to see Todd Rundgren, Cristofer Cross and a few others doing Beatles songs, we got our picture taken together, we were wearing a rock and romance T-shirt from Todd’s cruise and he told us he liked our T-shirts. That was a little under 300 per which I thought was a bargain.

I could look up and see how many original members are left, but not now. Thank you for the additional food for thought. It sounds like you had fun with your premium seats and VIP experiences. I want some of that.

In a weak moment I decided to go for one of the VIP tickets for the Chicago concert I mentioned a few posts above this one.  I went for VIP package #2 and here's what I got with it:

The actual seat I chose was in row 6, center, and on the aisle.  Even my old, long-forgotten disc camera could take good photos from that distance. 😁  The final price with fees was $377.  I'll add a hotel later if I decide I need or want it.

Wonder how many members of Chicago are original

I actually took the time to look this up.  This iteration of Chicago has three founding members - Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, and James Pankow.  It will, of course, be interesting to compare and contrast Chicago with Jason Scheff, who was a former lead singer for Chicago and now heads Generation Radio.

The Big Easy Cruise will sail again, but in early 2025, as part of four cruises StarVista is doing back to back (Country Music Cruise, Soul Train, and Sandy Beaches being the others) -- the dates were announced on social media a few weeks ago and pre-registration is listed on the StarVista reservation site. But the fact that it is more than a year out likely explains why there isn't yet any lineup to announce.

The most interesting thing about the schedule is that there are no "early/late" shows -- even for Tedesci/Trucks, a major band that recently played Madison Square Garden and that is just coming on the ship to do one unplugged show. Unless the sales are so bad that only half the ship was reserved, one images a few people will find it challenging to get into that show.

You're right about the Big Easy Cruise.  I apologize.

The Tedeschi Trucks concert looks like it will be at 11:30 PM, which by itself will thin out a good portion of the crowd.  The last booking estimates I saw for Big Easy was about 70% booked.  That was a couple of months ago.  I hope they did better between then and now.  I assume they did.

In my email box appeared the second edition of SoulMates, a newsletter covering the McDonald LaBelle cruise.  This one mostly covered the comedians Alonzo Bodden and George Wallace.  That part was very interesting, and I think I'm going to have a good time with both of them onboard.  They also mentioned the dining situation onboard - both complimentary and extra cost, and the fact that they're about 70% booked.

Alonzo is always on The Jazz Cruise and he's hilarious. He also tailors each performance for the specific cruise that he's on. I imagine there will be some (gentle) Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald jokes  -- although it'd be hard to beat this classic SCTV skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JLbhEUE_5U

Speaking of The Pearl, I noticed that an Afrobeats (contemporary Nigerian music) cruise being put on by Sixthman was quietly cancelled a few weeks back. This was NOT the cruise that ended up yielding Mcdonald/LaBelle -- I was hoping that it might go to "Cannonball" status (where Sixthman offers greatly reduced prices for cruisers already booked on another SM cruise). I actually just saw the act that would have been the headliner at a local pretty recently, and it wasn't very crowded, which might explain why the cruise isn't happening. There are currently no Cannonball offerings.

I got an interesting survey a few hours ago. Sixthman and their Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea cruises are apparently looking at adding a cruise to Alaska in 2025 and beyond. They asked a few questions related to this, like whether I was willing to sail to Alaska in September, and if I preferred more sea days or more days in port.

I'm only minimally interested in the blues or cruising to Alaska, so I'm not sure how I got put on a survey list like this. But it should be interesting to see the results of this.
