Late Departure from Port of Lisbon

We are on the transatlantic sailing from Lisbon to NYC in November.  We don't leave Lisbon until later in the evening.  We are wondering if we can drop our luggage with out checking in until later.  Or can we complete the whole check in process and still leave the ship and come back on closer to sailing?  TIA.

On another line I have completed check-in, boarded the ship, and gotten back off to do things returning 2 hours before sailing.

If you do this in the US, be sure to bring your passport with you off the ship!  I did but my son did not - it was looking like I was going to have to board to retrieve his passport to get him back on, but then they let us slide.
