Alaska Cruise - Helicopter Tours

It’s our first Alaska cruise and we wanted to do the helicopter tour but it appears all excursion companies with and without the ship are all full already. Has anybody else run into this issue? Do they open up frequently? We’re a couple of months out from our cruise. Any other adventurous recommendations for a family of 4? Kids are 10 and 12, so limited to the glacier hikes that have a 12 age minimum, sadly.

Hello @Wfamilycruiser

Welcome to the Cruise Critic message boards and thank you for your new thread! However, it was posted on an incorrect forum. It was off topic there. Therefore, no replies.

To help you out I have moved your new thread to the Ports of Call - Alaska forum where it will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have taken Alaskan helicopter tours frequent this forum and provide feedback here. Browse through the thread titles on this forum looking for threads of interest. You will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you have posted! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list of the various forums. I suggest you Bookmark the page or put it in your Favorites for easy access in the future. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will reply to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum where it will be on topic. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your inquiry if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you with replies.

I suggest you use the Follow feature on any other threads where you are interested in the new replies. That way you will not have to go looking to see if there are new posts because they will come looking for you as notifications. If you need information on how to do it, please click here: How to: Follow Topics & Forums (Subscribed Threads/Forums Info)

To find your fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with you on your cruise, you need to post on the specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your cruise line, ship and sail date. Please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the GuidelinesWe also have the following oldie but goodie Cruise Critic article you might enjoy8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call

The specific Roll Call thread for your cruise is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you. Roll Calls are for people to get to know one another before their cruise. Therefore, there will be all kinds of discussion! Roll Calls belong to everyone on the Roll Call thread. There is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread.

And since you are sailing with family, I suggest you research Family Cruises: Ask a Question - Cruise Critic Message Board Forums. You will find family cruise advice there. Also, the forum for your cruise line that you did not mention will be helpful too.

If you ever need technical help in regard to using the Cruise Critic message board software, go to the Need Help Using the Forums? Check Here! forum. You will see a large amount of "How to..." pinned threads toward the top of the forum's first page. Also, browse through the threads in the forum looking for threads of interest. Again, you will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are so very glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

I see your post is from the end of march, so this may be a little too late, but have you tried with the helicopter companies directly in the ports of call you will be stopping?  Looked at all of the helicopter excursion options, even the more expensive ones? The closer it gets to embarkation, the harder and more expensive it gets to book popular excursions such as helicopter ones.  I guess it all depends on when your cruise is, what ports it will be calling on, and how many ships are in port at the same time filling up those excursions.  It will be expensive for a family of 4 regardless, but the experience and memories of it will be priceless if your budget can afford.  We’re booked for a helicopter/glacier/dog sledding one ourselves this June and glad we booked early.  I see there is still some availability with one of the popular helicopter services depending when and where. I hope you already did, or will find an available option for your family to enjoy.

We had good luck with Costal Helo in Juneau. Call direct. Remember AK time is one hour later than Seattle. Many times weather cancels so be ready with back up plans. Likely been full for several weeks but may have someone canceled. Skagway may have better chance with better weather.

Do you mind sharing your experience with Coastal (like or dislike)? I am doing my research for next year and seriously considering doing a helicopter tour out of Juneau. So far, I have been able to find 3 companies (Temsco, Coastal, & Northstar) that offer such tour. I am trying to see if there is one preferred by more people than others.

We had great time with Costal. Pilot mapped out our route on a brochure after flight. It was really great.

What an amazing photo and experience!
