Art Auctions

Recommended Posts

Before we had kids and went on cruises alone, we always hit the art auction. Great place to get free champagne and do some people watching. It was something to do. Never bought a piece of art, but I did enjoy looking at it and watching the show.

To say that B, C and D are just as bad as A doesn’t make A good — just means they’re all bad.

But all of the ire of this board is directed at A, when the gross majority of people's money goes through B, C, and D.  Why don't B, C, and D get anywhere close to the same hate a A does?

People are so worried that the $400 that you spend on a piece of art is a "$10 poster" but they seem to think that when you lose $400 in the casino that it's ok.  When in the end, both situations you are out $400.  (Although, in one, you get to have something to look at when you get home)

It's amusing to me that people find so much fault in how PW tries to convince you to buy a piece of art, but there's no fault in the delusional idea that you will walk out of the casino on a regular basis with a lot of money.  Or that the spa spends so much time upselling snake oil after you just got a $200 electroshock therapy.

Nobody is saying the auction is great.  But some are saying that you should educate yourself before spending money.

I am one who agrees you should educate yourself before spending significant amounts particularly on a ship. I agree that the internet makes that education somewhat easier, but I think the education necessary to intelligently buy a piece of art would require more than a few minutes on your phone at the auction.

I don’t believe anyone said losing money — particularly a significant amount of money — at the casino is ok. Maybe I missed it.

More than one poster has suggested that people who go to the casino know they will probably lose money. As if that justification makes it ok vs an art auction.

Same idea when others suggested that people know the spa “value” compared to getting the same treatment at home. Therefore making it ok to spend too much money there.

You may have missed that.

You did not miss it. The comments regarding the casino were that people know the odds are against them and approach it (or should approach it) with that knowledge. Art auctions tend to be approached with less skepticism beyond the knowledge that the auction company is in the profit business and not looking to nickel and dime (or dollar and five) the patrons. Perhaps that's faulty thinking on the art auction crowds.

Hoping someone who has been to a Park West auction recently or is just familiar with the artist they feature on board can fill me in on who they are currently featuring... Specifically looking for Kre8 and Willardson. But any info on who they have... I am aware of the general line up, but looking to see who is relatively new to their line up. (Although I know Willardson has been around for a while).

Thank you - Happy Cruising!

OP, to answer your question. Just was on Symphony last week and I did see Kre8 had some paintings hanging on the wall. Didn’t notice Willardson.

Not nearly the same as saying one is OK and the other isn’t. Still seems you’re both just quibbling over degrees of badness.

Thank you so much for responding to my original question and not gambling that I would not appreciate your answer!
