Hey Celebrity People! We LOVED Royal Caribbean!

Recommended Posts

We have also sailed on the Jewel and IMHO, is still the most beautiful ship we have been on.

We are diamond members on RCCL, and have sailed on Celebrity once, and while we had a great time on the Galaxy, I would walk past three Celebrity ships to get to a RCCL ship. We thought that Celebrity was just a little to pretentious for us. They actually strongly suggested that you remain in formal attire the entire evening on formal night while you were out and about the ship, ecxept for the lido deck. I'm sorry, but thats just a little to stuck up for me. If I want to change out of my Tux after dinner before going to the casino to donate money to their coffers, which I did, thats my choice. I did get a few looks but who cares.

Someone posted a link to this thread over in the Princess forum (a discussion about clothing, believe it or not:rolleyes: ). This is a lovely story and shows that some people are considerate and caring about others. I rather have interesting people sit at my table rather than boring, but dressed to the nines. There are some people on CC who boost about tattling on others just because they're not dressed according to the guidelines. I think these fashion police should just mind their own business.

I say if people don't want to follow the evenings dress code they should either eat in their stateroom or the windjammer.

Kewlguy......Assuming you are serious...if you read the beginning of the story..these people did stay away. Not because they were dressed in shorts..or jeans..or something else very inappropriate. Simply because the gentleman had no suit or jacket. He was, however, in possession of a suitable shirt..trousers..etc. (from what I gather)..and the other gentleman at the table insisted he should join them for the next formal meal. To which they both dressed the same to ease any awkwardness.

This is the right attitude to have...and in my opinion.. I would be very surprised if anyone noticed anything different at all. We were onboard with 2000 people last year ..on a 14 day Med itinery. which is a bit of a special cruise...quite a lot of prestigue in sailing to the med. It was our first Cruise ...age 56 and 61 and We are not in possession of formal wear...nor do we have a lot of money. We were worried..but.We dressed as smartly as we could. We fit in with no trouble. Everyone was fantastic..Some were over the top in tuxs and formals..but most others were the same league as us...some even more casual. But in truth no one really noticed what anyone was wearing. Everyone was chatting to everyone...I couldn't honestly remember or describe a single ladies outfit..nor could I say if every man had a suit or jacket. All that stood out to me.. was that everyone looked nice...and everyone was having a great time!!

As the old saying goes "The suit doesn't make the Man!" Carol

I am all for formal on formal night. I see too many people trot out the excuse that, "well it's *MY* vacation." You know, it's everybody on boards vacation too. That said, there are situations wherein a cruiser has an issue, financial or otherwise, usually falling into the, "none of my business" category that precludes them from donning formal dress.

If that is the case, I am not so obtuse that I cannot see to a bending of the rules. There is a huge difference between someone baiting others to get a rise, or saying that the rules do not apply to them (and in my experience this attitude has a tendency to go across the board into areas that affect the vacations of others, such as line cutting etc) and someone with issues.

Someone dressing in their honest best, caring for how they look... it's more than the clothes. Their hair will be neat, they will appear clean, no rips or tears in their clothing, etc. It's beyond whether the outfit has sparkles. Those people stand out as "formal" to me. This is in the dining room btw, and not just after a rough and tumble shore excursion.

Thanks everyone for replying to my post. I have been on these boards for a couple years and rarely post anything of any length. It's been very interesting to read the variety of opinions, both on this board and on the one for Celebrity. I hope to meet many of you on the high seas,

Cathy

Cathy - a very nice post! I, too cruised Celebrity first and have been a RCCL addict ever since! I love Celebrity too - but love the FUN on RCCL.

How sweet of you to see the discomfort of your table mates. You guys ROCK in my opinion!

Keep on cruisin,

Mary :)

Just wanted to let everyone know what really special people Cathy and her husband Paul are. We met originally on the CC board before our April 8, cruise on the Jewel of the Seas, then had the honor of meeting them at our Meet and Mingle on board. They are really a wonderful couple and can totally understand why they did what they did for their tablemates. It's so nice to know there are still a few caring people around. It seems like on a cruise anymore all you hear is the complaining about this and that.

Thank you Cathy and Paul we really enjoyed meeting you. Hopefully, in the future we can book the same cruise and meet again.

Happy Cruzin'

People will forget what we said, what we wore and maybe even forget our names; but they will remember how we made them feel! How do I want to to be remembered? What experience do I want to create for others?

Thank you Cathy, for reminding all of us through your words AND actions what is truly important! :) Thanks for the review of the Jewel too!

This is our first cruise given to us by my dd and son-in-law. We are feeling rather nervous about formal night, also. We are retired and live on a tight budget my dh does have a suit but I don't have any thing I feel is formal and really don't want to invest in something I would never wear again. I do have a black skirt with a black tank and a lace over shirt but I just was not sure about that. With what I have read here I just hope that we are seated with people as "KIND" as everyone here. I know we will be neat and clean and have our hair combed and dh will have his shoes shined I hope that is enough and from what I just read on this post I think it will. Thanks for this post and helping me to feel better about the situation.

It is interesting to read this thread on both boards. On the Celebrity board, some folks applaud the OP but many are making very unkind remarks about both the OP and the subject of her post. I guess the rumour about Celebrity being superior applies only to clothing because the civility and understanding are certainly not in the excess there.

Remember, every board has a hot button issue, every board. RCI posters can be just as harsh, pushy and downright frustrating about bringing booze on board. The Princess Board has the clothing thing. On Carnival don't speak badly about the line.

Just something I've seen here.

That's true, Nliedel. Good perspective.

How's the training going?

Ugh. That's all I can say right now, ugh. I will never again, as long as I live, EVER take a winter off. It's too hard to get back out there in the spring!

Limpygirl...Please don't worry! How wonderful that Your Daughter and son in Law have done this for you. Just Relax and Enjoy every minute of your cruise. It is going to be Amazing..believe me! These weeks before... of Planning...and anticipation...are all part of it. NO ONE.. is that aware of what you are wearing...it really is True. I know I live in the Uk...But I am American...and I cannot imagine people are any different on the cruises there. Most likely, you will be sitting in the dining room with people RC feel are compatible. Either Cabin Cat. wise...or age..whatever. Judging by what I have observed...and read...there seems to be little conflict at dinner... and.. there seems to be some method to how the tables are arranged. I was very nervous...but We ended up with a lovely family.

The Only time People have Definitely Noticed.....and Complained...is If You are Dressed totally Inappropriate. eg. Shorts..Jeans etc. Which is Not the Case We are Talking About.....Nor For the People in the Original Post.

You are exactly in the position we were in...We are 56 and 61... Living on one income...a teacher salary..with 2 kids still at home. My husband had a suit. A very nice one actually, given to him at christmas by my one of our daughters. At the time she was a bit upset at his response, as he had no idea where he would wear it. Our cruise came up enexpectedly at the last minute...when we found a special offer and decided to go for it. Then came the clothes issue. I had nothing at all..other than jeans. Ebay..and some inexpensive shops and sale items got me through. My daughters did loads for me.

We actually were so concerned...we expected to eat at the Windjammer..which we thought was just a poolside cafe then. It is in reality, a very lovely restaurant..and we actually chose to eat several dinners there. But.. the dining rooms are positively gorgeous..and after reading these posts on CC...we found lots of different opinions on dress..and various levels of formality. I like to dress up...but never get the chance..and I am certainly not model material. But Most of us enjoy feeling special. Just because you haven't a lot of money..or new stuff..or are not a size 10 (or is it size 6 these days) doesn't mean you can't look nice. A little effort, makes all the difference.

I Sincerely hope I have not come across as being rude, or against, those that dress to the nines...because that is not what I meant. If you have these clothes....thats fantastic...and it is the Best Ever Chance to Wear Them..The Ships are so Elegant...Especially the Jewel.

We have only been on Legend.. to the med for 14 days.. Where I also wore a Black tiered ankle length skirt. I teamed it with a sparkly top ( both bought off EBAY for a few $) I wore this to the first formal Night..which was also the Captains cocktail Party. My husbands dark suit was perfect. We blended right in with no trouble. There were all levels of clothing...and even those dressed in the Most Formal...didn't stand out amongst the others. Everyone just mixed.

We had our photos taken for all 3 formal nights..and they all looked really Great (for us).. The kids loved them. (A lot of credit goes to the beautiful marble staircase we were standing on.....and the photographer.) At the photographers...You have a chance to see everyones' photos on the display boards..and this is when you actually are aware of the different styles of clothes. Lots of people "were" much better dressed than ourselves..but the "majority" were about the same.

I wore the same black skirt to the 3rd formal event as well..but with a different top...and a chiffon pastel printed 3/4 skirt and dressy blouse to the second. Nothing I owned cost more than $25. My shoes were actually the biggest let down...I will remedy that next time. I also don't own any nice jewelry....which really would make a difference. As I can't forsee any Diamonds coming my way!... I think I will be checking out the cheap and cheerful counter...at my favorite jewelers. Walmart!! lol

You will look lovely in your black skirt and lace overblouse...and your husband in his suit...and you will meet some Very Nice People. I Promise. Just :) Have the most Fantastic Cruise..and please tell us all about it when you return. I Look forward to it. All the Best, carol

I know exactly what you mean. As you might know, it gets really cold here in the winter but I just could not stop the long runs because it took too long to ramp up afterward. Besides, you never get overheated running in freezing temps!

Limpygirl... Hi connie...My apologies...I didn't see your original post in front of me when I replied above..Just looked back and realize you are on Navigator. The OP was talking about Jewel. that's even more exciting...NOS is coming to the Uk for the first time next year..she is so huge..and there is so much to see and do...you really have no worries. Also noticed you are from Pennsylvania..both my parents were born and raised in Pittsburgh...lived there over 40 years..before coming to florida...where I was raised. I had quite a lot of family there. Sadly, most have past on now..but I still have a sister in Monroeville. I loved the visits I had as a child to Pittsburgh.. It was very exciting traveling up by train. Enjoy that cruise...It's gonna be great!. carol
