Live from the Dawn

Recommended Posts

The last day is that love/hate thing. Love still being aboard, but hate the fact it is almost over. Just enjoy it while you can. It goes by way to quickly. Have fun in the sun!!!

Thanks Jackie - You seem like you are my biggest fan.....

Don't you sleep???? I see you were on line at like 5:30 this morning.

Got to go.

Dave

Dave,

I love reading onboard reviews and most people don't spend a lot of time on the computer when onboard. We got the 200 minute package last time plus the extra they give you and used up every minute of it.

I fall sleep early and get up early. You won't catch me on here at night.

Enjoy..

jackie ---- thanks for nassau maps. we thought we would like to see atlantis. is taxi the best way to get there?

do you know far it is from the pier?

larry

Larry,

You can either take a land or water taxi. It is not too far. If you take a land taxi, there is a one way charge to cross the bridge. Last time I went it was $2. The Water Taxi is $6 round trip and you don't cross the bridge.

Quick story.... I was staying on Paradise Island a few years ago and we called for a taxi from the airport. A white stretch limo picked us up. I was with my mom, aunt and cousin and we were very tired after a long travel day. We were all hungry and wanted something quick to bring to the condo with us. The taxi driver stopped at Kentucky Fried Chicken and we got a bucket to go. It was funny going to a place like that in the limo. He told us to call anytime we needed a ride, but we ended up renting a car for the week.

Hope this helps.

Larry,

Just found this...

Taxis are plentiful and can be hailed everywhere, be it right by your ship or at all the hotels and restaurants. Count on sharing the taxi with other tourists and locals. Rates are fixed by law. Typical fares to Paradise Island are $4 per person, plus a 15 percent gratuity.

Jitney buses run between the downtown area to Cable Beach and Paradise Island from early morning until about 7 p.m. at 30-minute intervals. Fares vary (though generally about $0.75), depending on route. Exact change is required.

The Nassau Water Taxi departs every 30 minutes from behind the Straw Market to Paradise Island, operating daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. The roundtrip cost is $6. Notes: Though the trip takes just 10 minutes, the water taxi may not depart on time. Since the operators tend to give you a bit of a "tour" along the way, expect to be approached for a gratuity.

Appreciate your running commentary and the bridgecam shows you now have lots of sun. Question on Le Bistro and Cagney's. Do they still have half price for the first night? They had that the time we were on in Sept 2005 for all three extra tariff restaurants. We are going on when you folks are getting off (the ship ;-)

If you get a chance to use the computer on board, maybe you could share with us what your experience is like next week.

Have a great cruise.

There are a few shops, Hard Rock Cafe, some other bars, and a straw market. But, I am not sure what would be open after 8:00pm.

The big attraction in Nassau is the Atlantis Casino so most people head over to there. We plan on staying on the ship while in Nassau this trip.

Larry,

You're not bugging me at all. I know you will be very close to the straw market and downtown, but I'm not sure what time they close. I've been to Nassau quite a few times and have never bothered to go to Atlantis so I can't be of any help there. We've always stayed on Paradise Island except when it's been a cruise port.

When you get there, you will go through the Welcome Center, Festival Place, which also has vendors and entertainment (an island band last time we were there)

'Visitors can join in and dance to the live Bahamian music in the indoor square on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Operating hours are Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Straw Market (Bay Street): Nassau’s famous Straw Market is one of the largest in the world, and is open seven days a week from early morning until evening. Here, you’ll find an array of handmade mats, hats, and baskets along with fabrics, jewelry, woodcarvings, and guava jellies. Of course, half the fun of shopping here is in the bargaining. The Straw Market is on downtown Bay Street, a block east of the British Colonial Hotel.

They really do bargain with you. I do not like to do that, but I was looking at pocketbooks and the woman said, 'you like that, for you $85' and I said, 'no thank you'... She continued to lower the price until I ended up getting two very nice bags (they are NOT real designer bags) for $70.

I'm sure there will be nightspots since you are docked very close to downtown.'

You can just walk around and get a feel for things. There is a Senor Frogs very close by also. You could go to Paradise Island if you want to check it out for the next day. You could also take a taxi to Cable Beach. The hotel there has shops, bars, restaurants, entertainment, etc.

This is a link for entertainment in Nassau...

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. I'll try to help if I can.

Glad to hear you're having a great time on this beautiful ship! She's one of our favorites! I've really enjoyed your on board blog -- I love to live vicariously through other people's cruises...;)

Me too, and soon we will be cruising neighbors!!!

OK- as soon as you get rested:

What time did the boat dock? It looked like about 8:30 from the live cam, but I wasn't sure.

What time did you actually get off the boat?

As others have stated- thanks so much for the updates. Obviously we loved them! I hope you are all tanned and realxed!:p

Just got home from this cruise about 3 hrs. ago. Although I've sailed Norwegian before, it was a long time ago and have sailed other lines since so I'll comment on a few things I observed. Liked the freestyle dining hate to be tied into certain times. We ate at Cagney's and Le Bistro both excellent meals. But really have to say that the food in the other dining rooms was really pretty bad. Belive me I am NOT a fussy eater and my dh will eat just about anything, but there were some nights that we were really hard pressed to find anything edible. Last night it was so bad that we just headed for the Blue Logoon and had a hot dog! Just really surprised, thought they had upgraded their menu? The Garden Cafe was the usual buffet food some good, some not so good.

Most of the staff was friendly, really good entertainment at the bar's. Fire and Ice and Best Of Friends were great. Although we didn't have the best weather, we still always found something to do on board. Casino was a little on the loose side, which was good!

Ship was very nice, looking a little worn around the edges, but still pretty. Cruise Director Matt Baker did a good job. He is leaving today for a couple of weeks, but will return.

All in all, a much deserved week away, would sail on the Dawn again only if the price were right. The way I look at it is any cruise is a good cruise! If you go with any open mind and not compare cruise lines you almost have to have a good time.

One night the four of us agreed was "not too bad". But the food honestly lacked any taste and presentation was not to be found. Just really disappointed. Heard some good and some bad reviews on the NCL food, have to say honestly bad! I do realize everyone has their own opionions on food, but there were an awful lot of people in the dining room complaining to the servers about the food.

Well Love the Ocean 21 said the food in the Dining Rooms was very good and specialty restaurants excellent, while Clutter Lady liked the specialty restaurants but was very disappointed with the main dining rooms. What we learn is that everyone has different opinions and different expectations. We were leaving on the Dawn next week. We will board keeping an open mind and will decide for ourselves. I am disappointed that the cruise director will not be on board next week. Had read so many positive reviews on board about him. Last May when we sailed the Dawn we had a wonderful CD, so no matter what, it would have been hard to top him! Looking forward to read more comments from both of you!
