Cash onboard account - RCCL

I see that one of the options for the onboard account is with cash. If I open my onboard account with cash, do I get back whatever I don't spend at the end of my cruise. Or do I have to wait for them to send it to me by mail. When do you give them the money? Is it at the pier when you check in.

Thanks:)

Personally, I think doing it in cash is a real hassle. You have to put down $250 per person when you check in, and if you go over that amount before the cruise ends you have to go back down to the purser's desk and put more money in. If you have a balance, you have to go to the desk on the morning you depart and get any remaining. I've seen people stand in line for an hour or more just to settle their accounts. A credit card is so much easier.

I have done this option several times. The very last night of the cruise if you go after !:15 pm they usually have finalized the account. Go and get what money is owed to you then. Do not buy anythiong after that or you will get an announcemnt over the PA and a two hour wait to settle the account.

I have not done it since the sign and Sail computer check-in has started. Before I had to get on board and first thing I had do before anything including lunch was to go to the Purser's Desk/Front Desk and deposit at least $250.00. There is a problem with this method that has happened to me, it is that they will allow you to go over the $250.00 quite a bit if you are not watching on the TV. this can lead to problems. Also be careful if you use part of your deposit in the Casino as they charge you for it and they don't finalize your bill for the day until around 11:00 PM so they may call your room or announce of PA. Mr & MrsXXX please contact the Purser's Office ASAP.

You would set up your on board account with cash at the guest relations desk once you board the ship. One other option would be to give a credit card at the beginning of the cruise and on the last evening if you want to pay off the bill with cash you can do that also.

Interesting story... we were on the Mariner last month and my GF decided to go the cash account route because she had bought U.S. currency at a very good exchange rate (much better than she'd get with her credit cards).

The thing is she was never asked to put down a cash deposit or give a credit-card number at the beginning of the cruise, yet she was allowed to run a tab on her SailPass account, which we tracked via the TV.

She went down to the guest-relations counter right after dinner the last night of the cruise and paid the balance. There was practically no one in line and she completed everything in about 15 minutes.

So I wonder if she decided not to settle her account, would they just send her a bill afterwards and hope she pays?
