Normandy

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry if this has been answered. We want to take a tour of Normandy from La Harve but the prices for the ship's tour seem extreme. Has anyone ever done a trip to Normandy on their own? We would very much appreciate any information we can get. Thanks.

We were in La Havre last year and decided to a trip to Paris instead of Normany but I did gather some links on private tour companies that you can check out. I would suggest you get with others on your rollcall and put together a small group 3 or 4 couples will usually fit in a van and that makes the private tours affordable.

Here are the links I had.

We used the above company for our Paris tour but they also do ones in Normany.

Those should keep you busy for awhile.

Have a great next cruise.

Last year on our Golden TA cruise we took the tour of Normandy with John of Handmaid Tours and it was the BEST tour of the entire trip. John is very knowledgeable, is personally involved in the preservation of the area and speaks both french and english. I believe he is originally from Ireland.

Our tour lasted 10hrs which included a wonderful lunch at a seaside cafe.

We shared the tour with 6 other CC's so the cost was quite reasonable, about 1/3 of what the ship charges and we didn't have to deal with crowds or lines. We were also able to make changes and stop when we wanted.

Hope this helps.

I just went through some old posts from our TA last year and I found the price info on Handmaid tours. The rates may be a bit more but you get the idea.

"550€ = $730.62 USD or $182.66 per person if split among 4 passengers. For 6 passengers, the fare is 700€ or $929.91 USD, which would be $154.99 pp if split 6 ways."

Two years ago we arranged a private tour with a wonderful guide. She was knowledgeable and pleasant and was waiting for us on the dock when we got off the ship. She has a comfortable van that will hold 6 passengers + herself. She took us to all the Normandy areas the ship's tour goes + the Bayeaux Tapastries which we wanted to see. The tapastries were amazing! She also stopped at a charming seaside French town. I have no hesitation is recommending her.

Her e-mail address is: anne-marieleblic@wanadoo.fr

Why don't you rent a car and do the tour yourself. It's very easy, you just follow the coast and you will see all the D-Day beaches and the cemetary. It would be alot cheaper and you can see what you want. Maybe you can even get another couple to go with you and lessen the cost more. Do a little research, get a map at Borders, get on the Avis website and reserve a car.

We do this all the time and usually the cost is around $100.00. The driving is easy, roads are well marked and the freedom is wonderful.
