Size of Carry-On Items Improved for U.K.!

We are departing for Barcelona on Oct 3 and were delighted to see this morning that we can now carry on a larger suitcase. This will definitely make it much easier to pack! (We're connecting through Heathrow.) It pays to keep checking as they occasionally ease restrictions. Just in case you all haven't seen the September 22 revision -

As of Saturday the 23rd, on my husband return from the UK, he still had to check his carry on. None allowed.
This is incorrect. Cabin baggage has been allowed again since about 15 August. "None allowed" was only in effect for about four or five days, and has not been the position for well over a month now.

If your husband had to check the bag that he wanted to carry on, it is likely that his bag exceeded the maximum size permitted at UK airports. On Saturday 23 September, the maximum size had already reverted to what has basically always been the maximum size at UK airports. If his bag was too big to be allowed through security at a UK airport, it always was too big and it always will be too big. The only possible difference is that the maximum size restriction is currently being rigorously enforced.

More details of the relaxed restrictions that came into effect on Friday 22 September - including the return to the standard size - are available on this page.

We flew from the UK to the US the other day. One observation was that even with all of the publicity about what one can take and not take on the flights it was amazing to me how many people either had the wrong size carry on bag (too large) or had items in the bag that had to be discarded. So, be sure to read carefully about the size of the bag and what you can bring on board. The bag must fit into a wooden sized box (the size of the carry on), otherwise you either have to take items out to make it the correct size or go back to the ticket counter to recheck the bag. Keep within the guidlines and not any larger.

  • 2 weeks later...

A further relaxation has been announced today.

Passengers on flights from the UK to the US can now bring on board liquids that they buy after the security checkpoint. This brings US-bound flights into line with flights to other destinations.

You still cannot take liquids through the security checkpoint.

And there is an exception: NW flights from Gatwick, on which liquids are still not allowed.
