aggiejeff Posted November 27, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 27, 2006 We are looking at a cruise out of New York on Crown next summer. Where exactly is the port that Princess uses? How far is it from the different airports?
willysgrandma Posted November 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 27, 2006 The ship leaves from Red Hook, Brooklyn. It is about a half hour drive from both JFK and Laguardia. You can read more about the terminal and get directions here: http://www.nycruiseterminal.com/terminalBKN.html
MNYTRPS2GO2 Posted November 28, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 28, 2006 Newark(EWR) Airport is another option and not that far from Red Hook...
barbarah33 Posted November 28, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 28, 2006 How long it takes to get to Red Hook depends on the traffic in NYC at the time you arrive. We flew into JFK and were there in less than 25 minutes - no traffic at all. We had four of us and arranged for a limo to meet us at the airport and it was very smooth and easy. (Though when we booked it the limo company warned us that it could take just over an hour to get there.)

Perki Posted November 28, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 28, 2006 We are looking at a cruise out of New York on Crown next summer. Where exactly is the port that Princess uses? How far is it from the different airports? This itinerary just started this past summer and I must say, you may want to read thru the reviews as there were MANY reviews of bad weather and lots of high seas, colder air, etc. Just wanted to let you know as I would certainly want to know if I was making a decision. No harm no fowl just a heads up on what to expect the first couple of days is all.
Colo Cruiser Posted November 28, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 28, 2006 We were on the Crown in late July and the Oct repo cruise and on the Oct cruise we had the worst weather so far on a Crown cruise. It was no problem and the ship handled the seas well. You will love it. On any ship you are at the mercy of the weather. :)
smeyer418 Posted November 28, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2006 The weather problems are off the Coast of NC. Cape Hatteras is notorious for bad weather. Other than that its hit and miss. We have sailed out of NY a number of time(like 7) and have good weather all the time. I have had bad weather in Vegas too(either too hot or too cold for outdoor swimming)... But as for the airports, LGA is the closest at 11 miles. Kennedy is either 16, 20, or 24 miles depending how you go and its only 16 miles to Newark as well. LGA will take any where from 20 minutes to an hour, Kennedy anywhere from 25 minutes to 1 and 1/2 hours and Newark anywhere from 30 minutes to also an 1 and 1/2. The most expensive one is probably from Newark since you are going from one state to another. Cabs from Red Hook to LGa ran about $30.00. Kennedy should be in the $45.00 range and EWR about $60.00. Going back to EWR its the meter plus round trip tolls plus 15.00 plus tip. I think it should be around the same $60.00 or so.
willysgrandma Posted November 28, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 28, 2006 Unfortunately, the Crown missed Bermuda on several cruises at the end of summer this year. The ship is not sailing down that way after the first week in September, it is doing New England cruises until it repos for the Southern Caribbean next year, which should eliminate some of the disappointment that many experienced not going to Bermuda this past September and early October. If the cruise is earlier in the summer, you shouldn't have many problems with the rough seas. We sailed from NY on Celebrity to Bermuda a few years ago in June and we hit rough seas coming back from Bermuda - it is those seas in Hatteras that can be a problem. Yes, the time to get to Red Hook is totally dependent on traffic - if you are going there on a weekend, you will hit less traffic than during the week. There is always construction on the BQE, which you pretty much need to take to get to Red Hook.
