What to Wear on Shore Excursions

I think I have a good idea of what to wear for dinner and in churches. My question of the day is what should women and men wear on shore? We are on the Med Cruise (Venice to Barcelona). Are shorts and hiking shoes ok for archeological sites such as Delos, Akitori and Pompeii? How about Dubrovnik? Villefranche? MonteCarlo?

What you describe is fine for hiking around ruins, but in places like Monaco, I would stay away from the hiking boots and go with nice sandals or flats. If you're going to any churches or holy places in any of the other cities, you will need to cover your knees and shoulders so a lot depends on what you're going to do in the ports.

I have a few pair of linen shorts and tops that I have found work best for my body temp. The linen allows the body to breathe ;) yet still looks nice.:o
