Masquerade Night? Is there still one?

We used to cruise quite frequently and there was always a masquerade night. However, for the pasr few years we have been travelling differently. What with all the troubles going on in Norht Africa, we are now back to our first love and cruising again. Is there still a masquerade night? Is there still a passengers' talent night? Are there still scavenger hunts?

If so when are they held? Are there wine tasting classes ? How are the art auctions run? Are any actvities foreseen for passengers who choose not to go on shore?

Sorry to have so many questions (these are only a very brief few) but we are really extremely curious.

Thanks for your answers. Please feel free to address any issue. I'm sure they won't be redundant.

Haven't seen a masquerade or talent show in years. They don't even have horse racing, daily mileage pool, pool games like they used to. Times have changed. :(

Don't go to the art auctions - waste of money!

What kind of activities for those who choose not to go ashore were you thinking of?

:)

And the scavenger hunts are gone.

On longer cruises, once in a while, there is a talent show. It really depends on the ship and crew.

They still have wine tasting. Prices vary according to ships. The last one we went to just gave a sampling of 5 of the wines offered on the Navigator packages - nothing really great or different.

Some of the cruises don't even have the ship building contest.

Thanks for your answer. Hope we won't be disappointed. There must be newer activities to replace the horse racing, etc. aren't there?

When I was asking about activities for those who stay aboard ship, it's because my husband will be doing quite a few shore excursions but I won't. Although I am not handicappedI have trouble walking or standing for a long time. So that taks out most of the onshore activities on an Alaska cruise as my sore back precludes me from kayaking or fishing. So I'll most likely just go into town for an hour or so and then return to the ship. Since I don't go to Casinos, I was wondering what else there is to do. Are there conferences during that time or are we expected to veg out and read ? That certainly wouldn't be any hardship but I can do that at home. So I was wondering what type of activities are offered?

They usually have a trivia game or a couple of board game contests but nothing really exciting. On our recent 21 day cruise they had a pax talent show, ship building contest, several cooking demos and the kids in the HAL club had a scavenger hunt. Probably only do these things on a longer cruise....jean

There was horse racing, shipbuilding and a talent show on our 15 day Hawaii cruise on MS Statendam last year. (Some 7 day cruises still have a talent show also.)

There also was a scavenger hunt one day. It was held in the Van Gogh lounge. Most pax were prepared for it with all sorts of weird stuff in their HAL canvas bags, so there was no need to go all over the ship seeking items. If I remember rightly, the audience was divided into two teams with cruise staff members representing the teams. It was a lot of fun!
