how much cash

Recommended Posts

We are planning on bringing about 6 to7 hundred for extra cash, this will be for souveniers, taxis, food off ship, tips off ship as well. We will also be travelling with our kids. Unless you are planning on spending big$$ on jewellery, purses etc. bring more. :)

We don't bring much cash since everything on the ship goes on your seapass account. If you do need cash while on the ship, there is no problem with going to the cashier in the casino and getting $$ and it is put on your seapass account.

As someone posted a few days ago, be very discret about doing this in the casino. They really do not want you using the cashier as an ATM, if you are not planning on sticking that money in any machine. Otherwise if this service starts being abused, they will have to start charging like carnival does. They do have an on board ATM that you can use as well.

We always get $100 in $1 and then bring about $500 more in small bills. Depending on your ports some prefer not to take a credit card and it depends on how much shopping you plan to do. I did quite a bit of shopping in Cozumel and they did take a credit card but asked me if I had cash first. It is charged in pesos and converted by the bank. If we did not have excursions that included lunch I for sure would prefer to pay cash in port for that.

Bring more cash than you think you will need. If you don't spend it, you can take it home and put it back in the bank!!!

Bring mostly LARGE bills--less "bulk" to carry. You can get smaller bills on the ship, as needed. (If you carry $100 in ones, that's ALOT of bulk--don't do that!!! You want your money to be as unobstrusive as possible!!!!

In ports, especially the "straw markets" take smaller denominations--they love US money, but may try to give you change in the local bills! Bring as close to exact as you can!

Once you are on the ship, money won't work except in the casino, anyway! We tip in cash, so we plan ahead for that.

We took a couple of hundred $U.S. and no more (small bills).

First we don't like to carry large sums of cash.

Second, all shipboard expenses go on Seapass (incl. tips), and

finally, when we needed extra cash (several more times)

we got it from the Casino.

No big deal!

(and don't forget there are always credit cards)

I agree. We do the same.

How much cash should I bring for our 7 day cruise? There are 4 of us, 2 being young kids. Most things will be going on the credit card. I was wondering what most do?

Hi there,

As I have read some of the other posts, yes, be careful if you do try to get cash from the casino. On some ships, they may charge you a 3% service fee for the cash. As you said, most will go to your Seapass account on board. If I were you, I would bring $500 max. - depending on what you want to buy. In most ports (depending on your itinerary of course), the nicer stores accept all major credit cards. Some stores will tell you how much you'll be paying in US dollars but when you get home, you may incur a very small foreign fee for the $$ conversion. It's not much, maybe 50 cents, $1.00 - depending on what you buy. That is worth it to me because less cash I have to take (safety too) and you might even come out ahead if the exchange rate is in your favor.
